Bent
Matchbox Twenty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And if I fall along the way
Pick me up and dust me off
And if I get too tired to make it
Be my breath so I can walk

And if I need some other love, then
You give me more than I can stand
And when my smile gets old and faded
Wait around, I'll smile again

Shouldn't be so complicated
Just hold me and then
Oh, just hold me again

Can you help me I'm bent?
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together
Keep breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

And if I couldn't sleep could you sleep?
Could you paint me better off?
And could you sympathize with my needs?
I know you think I need a lot

I started out clean but I'm jaded
Just phoning it in
Oh, just breaking the skin

Can you help me I'm bent?
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together
Keep breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

(How you and me)

Start bending me
It's never enough
'Til I feel all your pieces
Start bending me
Keep bending me until I'm completely broken in

Shouldn't be so complicated
Just touch me and then
Oh, just touch me again

Can you help me I'm bent?
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together
Keep breaking me in
And this is how we will end
With you and me landing
Without understanding
Hell, I'd go there again

Can you help me, I'm bent?
I'm so scared that I'll never
Get put back together

Yeah, you're breaking me in

And this is how we will end
With you and me bent

Overall Meaning

The song "Bent" by Matchbox Twenty is a vulnerable and raw display of the singer's emotions. The lyrics represent a state of brokenness where the singer is asking for help and support from their partner. The phrase "if I fall along the way, pick me up and dust me off" suggests that the person is in emotional pain and may not be able to handle it alone. They need someone to give them a sense of direction and purpose. Moreover, the line "be my breath so I can walk" indicates how the singer is reliant on their partner's emotional support to keep moving forward.

Throughout the song, the singer asks for reassurance and support from their partner. "Just touch me again," "Just hold me again," "Can you help me?" These lyrics suggest that the singer is not looking for anything complicated, just the warmth and comfort of their partner. The song is about the pain of feeling broken and the healing power of human connection. The chorus reflects this with the lines "Can you help me? I'm bent, I'm so scared that I'll never get put back together." The final line of the song, "With you and me bent," gives a sense of acceptance that the healing process is an ongoing process that they are willing to go through with their partner.

Growing up poor and born in a remote village with no TV and all I had was a broken radio that I got it for free, I spent much of time after school listening to western songs which was considered evil in my world. I remember hearing songs from matchbox 20 in the mid 90s I was just entering my teenage years, I had hope, I felt like there's more to life than poverty, pain and hunger, there's a big world out there and I must go. Today I get to sit here in my lofty life and listen to these songs again abd it brings tears.
