Her self-titled debut album, Mathilde Santing, came out in 1982 and she gas released well over fifteen studio albums since, most of them sung in English, although she sometimes performs and records in her mother tongue as well. Known for her whispery and vulnerable vocal style, Santing is a prominent gay role model in The Netherlands. She sang at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Gay Games in Amsterdam.
Santing's biggest chart success came in 1999 with the lush ballad 'Wonderful Life', which hit #6 in the Dutch Top 40. The song was taken from the 1999 album To Others To One, which is her highest charting album in her native Netherlands to date, reaching #4 in the Dutch album charts.
Beautiful People

You live in the same world as I do
But somehow I never noticed you
Before today
I'm ashamed to say
Beautiful people
We share the same back door
We never met before
But then
We may never meet again
If I weren't afraid you'd laugh at me
I would run and take all your hands
And I'd gather everyone together for a day
And when we gather
I'll pass buttons out that say
Beautiful people
Then you'd never have to be alone
'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you do
Include him in everything you do
Beautiful people
You ride the same subway
As I do ev'ry morning
That's got to tell you something
We've got so much in common
I go the same direction that you do
So if you take care of me
Then I'll take care of you
Beautiful people
Never have to be alone
'Cause there'll always be someone
With the same button on as you
Include her in everything you do
She may be sitting right next to you
She may be beautiful people too
So if you take care of her
Maybe I'll take care of you
And he'll take care of you
And I'll take care of you
The song "Beautiful People" by Mathilde Santing talks about how we all live in the same world together but we ignore the people we cross paths with every day. It's about recognizing that we share a common space and the responsibilities that come with it. The song's theme is empathy and the importance of human connection. The singer admits that she has never noticed these beautiful people before, but she is ashamed to say that.
The lyrics talk about the fact that we share the same back door, ride the same subway, and go in the same direction, yet we have never met before, which is not right. The song expresses fear of rejection and ridicule, but the singer wants to take the risk anyway. She wants to gather everyone together for a day and pass out buttons saying "Beautiful People" to show that they are not alone. She hopes that this gesture will help break the barrier of isolation and create a sense of unity.
The song's message is both poignant and relevant today, as we live in a world that is increasingly disconnected, even though we are more connected than ever before through digital media. The song urges listeners to take care of each other, to be kind, and to recognize that we are all part of the same human family. It is a call to unite and to care for those around us, even if we do not know them personally.

Beautiful people
People are beautiful
You live in the same world as I do
We exist in the same world
But somehow I never noticed you
We haven't crossed paths before
Before today
Until now
I'm ashamed to say
I feel embarrassed to admit this
We share the same back door
We are from the same community
And it isn't right
We should have met before
We never met before
We haven't had the chance to meet
But then
However
We may never meet again
This may be our only chance
If I weren't afraid you'd laugh at me
I am scared of your reaction
I would run and take all your hands
I would reach out to connect with you
And I'd gather everyone together for a day
I would bring everyone together
And when we gather
When we come together
I'll pass buttons out that say
I will distribute buttons with a message
Then you'd never have to be alone
You don't have to be on your own
'Cause there'll always be someone
Because there will be someone else
With the same button on as you do
Wearing the same button as you
Include him in everything you do
Involve others in your activities
You ride the same subway
You commute together
As I do ev'ry morning
Like I do each day
That's got to tell you something
That should mean something
We've got so much in common
We share similarities
I go the same direction that you do
We have the same destination
So if you take care of me
If you look out for me
Then I'll take care of you
I'll do the same for you
She may be sitting right next to you
She could be right beside you
She may be beautiful people too
She could be a beautiful person also
So if you take care of her
If you look out for her
Maybe I'll take care of you
I'll return the favour
And he'll take care of you
Others may take care of you too
