Lay Your Love On Me
Matt Berry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"On brick land, above the frying pan public house, I removed my boots to make love.

As the coins from my pocket hit the untreated wooden floorboards, a large number of roaches scurried from beneath the single mattress, the only piece of furniture in an otherwise empty room.

With her back to me, almost embarrassed, she placed the coins into a once white, greasy handkerchief. She turned round; I could smell gin, as she rested her head on my shoulder. She put her lips to my ear, and then she whispered:
"

Lay your love on me
Lay your love on me

I was blind but now I see

So come lay your love on me

I'd walk through sand in summer time, wade through snow in winter time, just for you now.

Lay your love on me

Lay your love on me

I was blind but now I see

So come lay your love on me

Like a mattress without fleas, or a trick without the fees

Oh come lay your love on me

Oh yes lay your love on me

I'd walk through sand in summer time, wade through snow in winter time, one day I know you'll be mine.

I'd walk through sand in summer time, wade through snow in winter time, in this town there's too much crime.

Lay your love on me

Lay your love on me

I was blind now I can see

So come lay your love on me

Making love above the pub, making love, making love x10

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Matt Berry’s song "Lay Your Love On Me" depict a scene of desperation, poverty, and longing. The singer and his lover have found a cheap room to make love, but the place is infested with roaches and only has a single mattress as furniture. The woman, who seems ashamed, collects coins from the floor as they fall from the singer's pocket, a grim reminder of their financial situation. The singer can feel and smell the gin on her lips as she whispers the chorus, a plea for her love. The verses contrast the hardships they are facing with the singer's determination to do anything for her, even walk through sand in summer or snow in winter.

The song's mood is melancholic, but at the same time, it portrays a deep sense of love and devotion. Despite the difficult circumstances, the chorus emphasizes that the singer is now finally able to see clearly, and his vision is focused entirely on his lover. The song's imagery paints a vivid picture of the struggles faced by those who are struggling financially and looking for love, two themes that are common in Matt Berry's music.

I will forever be annoyed at how this entire album was taken off Spotify. Even whilst it was on there, I was never a huge fan of this track, although that has changed now. Perhaps it is the mood I’m in, or just time passing, but I now believe this is one of the finer tracks of the album. Also, the part at the end reminds me a lot of something by Andrew Horowitz.
