WATER
Matt Cardle Lyrics

Don’t breathe a word
How was I so oblivious?
I didn’t see how we got so deep down
When we were walking on water for so long
I didn’t notice the waves crashing over
I thought we were sailing somewhere
Now I see your colours
And now I hear your truths
I need something to pull us outta here
If we could get back up to the surface
Tell me could it be
Like we were walking on water for so long
I didn’t notice the waves crashing over
I thought we were sailing somewhere
When did we start going under, under?
'Cause you made me wanna fight
'Cause I found something to believe in
You made me who I am
And it’s so hard to see how
We’re so deep down
When we were walking on water for so long
I didn’t notice the waves crashing over
I thought we were sailing somewhere
When did we start going under?
The lyrics to Matt Cardle's song "Water" depict a relationship that has taken a turn for the worse. The singer in the song is pleading with their partner not to give up on the relationship and not to say that it's over. They express regret that they didn't notice how the relationship had deteriorated until they were already in too deep. At one point, the singer describes the feeling of being on top of the world in their relationship, but now they are struggling to stay afloat.
The singer goes on to say that they now see their partner's true colors and hear their truths, suggesting that perhaps their partner wasn't being honest with them before. They plead for something to pull them out of the situation they find themselves in and for a way to get back to the surface of their relationship. The song ends with the singer expressing confusion about how they ended up in this place after feeling like they were walking on water "for so long."
Overall, the lyrics to "Water" are filled with regret, confusion, and a sense of desperation. The singer seems to be searching for a way to revive the relationship before it's too late, and expressing a deep sadness that things have gone so wrong.
