When We Collide
Matt Cardle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say "I love you boy"
But I know you lie.
I trust you all the same
And I don't know why.

'Cause when my back is turned,
My bruises shine.
Our broken fairytale,
So hard to hide.

I still believe,
It's you and me
till the end of time.

When we collide we come together,
If we don't, we'll always be apart.
I'll take a bruise i know you're worth it.
When you hit me, hit me hard.

Sitting in a wishing hole,
Hoping it stays right.
Feet cast in solid stone,
I got Gilligan's eyes.

I still believe,
It's you and me
till the end of time.

When we collide we come together,
If we don't, we'll always be apart.
I'll take a bruise i know you're worth it.
When you hit me, hit me hard.

'Cause you said hello,
It's where the going get's hard,
Our future is far,
Many of horror
Our future's far,
Many of horror
Our future is far,
Many of horror

I still believe,
It's you and me
till the end of time.

When we collide we come together,
If we don't we'll always be apart.

I'll take a bruise i know you're worth it.
When you hit me, hit me hard.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Matt Cardle's song "When We Collide" describe a complicated relationship in which the singer's partner consistently lies to them but they continue to trust them anyway. The singer acknowledges that their partner hurts them, but they still value the relationship and are willing to endure the pain. The "bruises" mentioned in the song can be interpreted metaphorically as emotional scars caused by the partner's deceit. The broken fairytale of their relationship is difficult to conceal, and yet the singer still believes in their love for each other.

The chorus of the song is particularly interesting in its depiction of the push-and-pull dynamic of the relationship. When the couple "collide," they come together and their love feels powerful and all-consuming. But when they are apart, they feel disconnected and distant. The singer suggests that they would rather endure physical pain than be without their partner, even though they know that the relationship is fraught with problems.

The second verse of the song adds new layers to the relationship's complexity. The singer is "sitting in a wishing hole," perhaps yearning for the relationship to be more stable or to change for the better. They feel stuck and heavy, as if their "feet [are] cast in solid stone." The line about Gilligan's eyes is a reference to the character from the TV show Gilligan's Island, who wears thick glasses that distort his vision. This could be interpreted as a commentary on the singer's own perception of the relationship - they may not be seeing things clearly or accurately, but they are still deeply committed to their partner.

Overall, "When We Collide" is a powerful, emotionally complex song that deals with themes of love, trust, and pain. Despite its somewhat controversial lyrics, it has resonated with many listeners and remains a popular song to this day.

Don’t know why he disappeared, his voice was GOLD!

@Julia68yt

His voice still IS, and it got better. Have you actually tried to visit the very channel this very video is on? Just because Matt doesn't get featured in every other mainstream hype doesn't mean he disappeared. 4 self-written and mostly self-produced studio albums, topping the indie charts, touring the UK, both with his live rock and acoustic bands, debuting in a full blown acting lead role at the West End, teaming up with Trevor Horn in between, just this summer he again did a stint at the West End as Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, and right now he's assembling his old old band for their 10yr anniversary.
Nowadays, if you want to keep yourself updated about anything relevant you have to actively follow the topic or you will get inundated with vacuous trash. In fact, Matt steers clear of every non-music related connection as best he can. He had several opportunities to prybar himself back into every f'ing "news" outlet when sh-t went flying over Ed Sheeran or even Meghan Markle. He gave it a hard pass.
