In early 2003, Costa's homemade demo reached No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, who offered to record more demos for Costa in his home studio. Those first recordings led to two EPs that Costa and Dumont distributed themselves. These were later combined and mixed by Phil Ek in order to form Costa's first full-length CD entitled Songs We Sing.
Costa spent the summer of 2005 opening on Jack Johnson's summer tour. He has since toured with Modest Mouse, Oasis, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, G. Love & Special Sauce, and Death Cab for Cutie. Costa joined Jack Johnson for his 2006 European tour. He has also contributed to the Jack Johnson and Friends Curious George soundtrack; his track is entitled "Lullaby". This song was taken from his The Elasmosaurus EP. Costa has also toured extensively in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia and South America.
The video for Costa's first single "Cold December" was released February 2, 2006. On July 31, 2007, he released a song titled "If You Took To Me" as part of the environmentally minded polar bear documentary Arctic Tale and its soundtrack.
On October 7, 2007, Costa released the first single, "Mr. Pitiful," from his record Unfamiliar Faces. The song "Mr. Pitiful" was used during a scene with Paul Rudd in the movie I Love You, Man, the redband trailer for the film Youth in Revolt starring Michael Cera, and the movie Marmaduke. The song is featured during the opening credits of The Answer Man (film). Apple also used an instrumental cut of this song for the worldwide iPhone 3GS ads.
Mobile Chateau, Costa's next album, was released on September 21, 2010, via Brushfire Records. His 2013 self-titled album was recorded at Pheasant Studios in Santa Ana, CA, as Costa's first solo production.
Shimmering Fields

So I took a ride away from the city
Stories I'd heard of mystery and magic
Traveling caravans left me enchanted
With rivers of sun glow just beyond the plateau
I followed them down to the well
There are your wishes there are your dreams
A mystical mistress in the forest of night
Knew that I'd come from city lights
Shimmering fields but of course my dear
Shimmering fields of gold
Many have followed the footsteps you're on
Good to know I'm not alone
La da da da da da
La da da da da da
Shimmering straight ahead I see
Shimmering fields of gold
All you could wish for and all you could dream
Shimmering fields of gold
The song "10 Shimmering Fields" by Matt Costa is a romantic and reflective piece about the beauty of nature and the thrill of discovery. It begins with the singer observing how flowers never cease to impress with their lovely appearance. He decides to take a ride out of the city, seeking to experience the enchanting magic and mystery of a traveling caravan's stories. As he follows the rivers of sunlight to a well, he realizes that the shimmering fields surrounding him are full of possibilities for wishes and dreams to come true.
In the middle section, the narrative shifts to introduce a mystical mistress, likely a personification of nature, who welcomes the singer to her forest of night. She knows that he has come from the city lights seeking the shimmering fields, but there is no need for explanation. The fields of gold are an obvious marvel, full of wonder and potential. However, the singer is not alone in his admiration, as many others have also followed this path, finding solace and inspiration in the radiance of nature.
The song's imagery and lyricism ebb and flow like a river, creating an evocative atmosphere that is both serene and adventurous. It urges listeners to take a break from their urban routines and bask in the glory of nature's bounty. "10 Shimmering Fields" communicates a strong message about the rewarding experience of exploring and discovering new depths of natural beauty.
