In early 2003, Costa's homemade demo reached No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, who offered to record more demos for Costa in his home studio. Those first recordings led to two EPs that Costa and Dumont distributed themselves. These were later combined and mixed by Phil Ek in order to form Costa's first full-length CD entitled Songs We Sing.
Costa spent the summer of 2005 opening on Jack Johnson's summer tour. He has since toured with Modest Mouse, Oasis, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, G. Love & Special Sauce, and Death Cab for Cutie. Costa joined Jack Johnson for his 2006 European tour. He has also contributed to the Jack Johnson and Friends Curious George soundtrack; his track is entitled "Lullaby". This song was taken from his The Elasmosaurus EP. Costa has also toured extensively in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia and South America.
The video for Costa's first single "Cold December" was released February 2, 2006. On July 31, 2007, he released a song titled "If You Took To Me" as part of the environmentally minded polar bear documentary Arctic Tale and its soundtrack.
On October 7, 2007, Costa released the first single, "Mr. Pitiful," from his record Unfamiliar Faces. The song "Mr. Pitiful" was used during a scene with Paul Rudd in the movie I Love You, Man, the redband trailer for the film Youth in Revolt starring Michael Cera, and the movie Marmaduke. The song is featured during the opening credits of The Answer Man (film). Apple also used an instrumental cut of this song for the worldwide iPhone 3GS ads.
Mobile Chateau, Costa's next album, was released on September 21, 2010, via Brushfire Records. His 2013 self-titled album was recorded at Pheasant Studios in Santa Ana, CA, as Costa's first solo production.
Wash Away

Float down stream, catch your wings
Heavens high, so you fly
Catch your dreams in the sky
But the glaciers have frozen your feet
I can't wait for eternity
And so you watched me wash away
Maybe well catch up someday
Sun sinks out of view
Stars they shine changing hue
But bright lights have blinded your sights
They can't adjust when day turns to night
And so you watched me wash away
But maybe well catch up someday
The castles we built were so tall
They only left us further to fall
And still I see them far away
But maybe we'll come back someday
Maybe we'll come back someday
Float down stream, rivers of dreams
Float down stream, catch your wings
The castles we built were so tall
They only left us further to fall
And still I see them far away
Maybe well come back someday
The castles we built were so tall
They only left us further to fall
And still I see them far away
As I watch them wash away
Wash away...
Wash away...
Wash away...
Wash away...
The lyrics in Matt Costa's song 'Wash Away' use the metaphor of streams, rivers, and water to convey a message about the fleeting nature of dreams, the passage of time, and the inevitably of change. The first verse encourages listeners to pursue their dreams and reach for the sky, but also acknowledges that sometimes our dreams get frozen or hindered by the obstacles we encounter along the way. The second verse juxtaposes the beauty of nightfall with the harsh glare of artificial lights and suggests that sometimes we can lose sight of our dreams when we get caught up in the distractions of modern life. The third verse reflects on the impermanence of even the grandest of human achievements, like castles, which can crumble and leave us with nothing but memories.
The chorus of the song repeats the line "Maybe we'll catch up someday" several times, implying a hopeful but uncertain optimism that someday we will be able to find and reconnect with our dreams, despite the way time and change may wash them away. The repetition of the phrase "Wash away" at the end of the song reinforces this theme of impermanence and movement, suggesting that even as our dreams may wash away, we have the power to keep moving forward and embracing whatever new opportunities and challenges come our way.
Overall, 'Wash Away' is a reflective and uplifting song that encourages listeners to keep dreaming, even when faced with obstacles and distractions, and to embrace the changes of life with hope and resilience.
