My Funny Valentine

Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favourite work of art
Is your figure less than greek
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?
But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day
Is your figure less than greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?
But don't you change one hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day
In the song "My Funny Valentine," Matt Giraud sings about a person who may not fit society's conventional standards of beauty and appeal, but who is still cherished and loved deeply by the singer. The opening lines of the song showcase the affectionate, endearing nature of the singer, calling his beloved a "sweet comic valentine" and expressing how the person's presence fills him with happiness. As the song continues, he notes that the person's looks are unconventional and not easily captured in photos, but to him, they remain stunning and beloved, referring to them as his favourite "work of art."
The song's middle stanza asks several rhetorical questions about the person's appearance and abilities, suggesting that they may not be traditionally attractive or articulate. However, the singer immediately reassures their beloved that they should not change for anyone, emphasizing the importance of being unapologetically oneself. The final line of the song, "Each day is valentine's day," encapsulates the feeling that one can be in love and feel loved by their partner every day, not just on the designated holiday.
Overall, "My Funny Valentine" is a song that celebrates unconditional love and acceptance, encouraging us to see beyond society's narrow definitions of beauty and romance to appreciate the unique qualities and traits that make each person special.
