Driving Song
Matt Harlan feat. Phoebe Hunt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, I can't sleep.
All the cars that pass outside flood my room with light,
& I wish I was gone – Windows down & rolling to your door.
'Cause baby I see you.
In the dim light of the bar night, as your hazel eyes go blue,
& I wish I could hold your hair back as the liquor takes its toll.

There's miles that sit between us & cities to pass through,
But I don't want to bear my soul to anybody new.
So I'm driving though the hours thinking of a song.
Driving through the hours 'til we can be alone.

Feel that Texas heat
As it beats down in the noonday & you're parked right on the freeway.
There's nowhere to hide – just steel
Frames rolling down the same long ride.
Just 20 minutes gone.
Shirt sweat on your armrest there's a
Sadness in your bones. I wish you were home,
'Cause I'm tired of being strong for when you go.

We scale the miles between us. We struggle to get through.
Working on our selves & working on each other, too.

We go driving though the hours singing our own song.
Driving through the hours 'til we can be alone.

Overall Meaning

The lyricist expresses his or her longing for their partner in the song, ‘Driving Song’. The lyrics depict a sleepless night where the sound of passing cars illuminates the singer’s room. The singer wishes he or she was with the partner, driving to her door with the windows down. The lyrics explain how the singer sees the partner in a bar and wishes to hold her hair back as she drinks. The singer feels the distance between him and the partner and the cities they have to traverse to get to one another. Despite the urge to open up to someone new, the singer only wants to share his or her thoughts with the partner. Therefore, the singer drives through the hours, singing his or her own song, in anticipation of being with his or her partner at last.

The lyrics express the idea of distance, both geographically and emotionally. The singer highlights how the miles between the two cities lay bare the struggle to maintain their relationship. As they both work on themselves and their relationship, they rely on one another to be strong during their lonely times. The reference to the ‘Texas heat’ is representative of the difficulty of engaging in a long-distance relationship, where the lovers only have steel frames and long rides to get to one another. However, the singer finds comfort in the thought of being alone with his or her partner, singing their own tune, driving through the hours, hoping to bridge the distance between them.
