The Time Of My Life
Matt Mays/Torpedo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time will lock you away

And throw away the key

Never to be seen or heard from again

I was once like you
But you still ain't like me

But you might want to think about

Tryin' to think about being like me

'cause I'll have the time of my life 'til I'm dead

One dark night walkin' home alone

A strange woman came down to me

Dressed in white and under a halo of golden light

She said 'boy you've got it all wrong you've got to concentrate more on the party and song'

I'll never forget the last thing she said

She said 'have the time of your life 'til you're dead'

Do you think you can be saved

Or is it too late for you?

With everything you have

And everything that you do

Now time will lock you away,

Yeah and throw away the key

But there ain't not a lock that can hold me

Have the time of your life 'til your dead

Die tryin'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Matt Mays's song Time of Your Life speaks about how time can be a powerful force that can trap and isolate people. He talks about how he was once like the person he is addressing in the song, but they are still not alike. Mays advises the person to consider being more like him as he plans to enjoy "the time of his life" until he dies. In the second verse, Mays narrates a story about a strange woman who advises him to concentrate more on enjoying life than worrying about what others think. She urges him to have the "time of his life" until he dies. Mays turns the focus back on the person he's addressing, questioning whether it is too late for them or if there is still hope. He acknowledges that time might lock them away and throw away the key, but he believes that there is no lock that can hold him.

The first verse of Time of Your Life is a warning of the trap that time can be, how life can pass by so quickly, and how it is essential to take advantage of the time we have on earth. The second verse encourages the listener to have a more relaxed outlook on life, to worry less about what others think and concentrate more on enjoying themselves before it is too late. The gradual shift in the song from the first verse's lagging pace to the second verse's lively rhythm suggests that living life to the fullest is the way to avoid being consumed by the clutches of time.
