Hold Me
Matt Nathanson Lyrics

And save me from myself
I claim to be so righteous
But I'm just like everyone else
I was judging you when I realized
Just how big a lie I lead
Hold me
In my walk through brilliance
But I've grown so much hollower
And the paths have all grown dense
With vines of green, the color of envy
With vines of green, the color of jealousy
And it's funny but I hate it
When you steal the spotlight from me
Hold me
I've no patience for hypocrites
I have no patience for fakes
I've no patience for those
Who make my same mistakes
So hold me
I truly wish you could follow me
In my walk through brilliance
But I've grown so much hollower
And the paths have all grown dense
With vines of green, the color of jealousy
With vines of green and all my insecurities
And it's funny, but I hate it
When you steal the spotlight from me
Hold me
The lyrics to Matt Nathanson's song Hold Me are both introspective and relatable. The singer starts by acknowledging his flaws, admitting that he claims to be righteous but is just like everyone else. He then goes on to describe a situation where he was judging someone else before realizing that he was living a lie himself. In this sense, the song is all about self-reflection and the struggle to be a better person.
The second verse is particularly poignant as the singer talks about his desire for others to follow him and see the brilliance of his life. However, he recognizes that he has become hollow and that the paths he once walked along have grown dense with vines of green. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for how envy and jealousy have crept into his life, making it difficult to find his way forward.
Despite his feelings of insecurity and jealousy, the singer still asks for comfort and support from those around him, hence the repeated "Hold me" refrain throughout the song. He acknowledges that he has no patience for hypocrites and fakes, which suggests that he is trying to live an authentic life, even if it is not always easy.
Overall, Hold Me is a powerful song that speaks to the struggle of being a better person and the challenges that come with it. It is also a reminder that we are all human and that we all make mistakes.
