New Coats and New Hats
Matt Nathanson Lyrics

Where you stand alone right now
I remember celebrations
But now my reign has run
All the color from
All my decorations
And I'm fine; I'm just a little lonely
So can I ride on your back for a time?
So quickly these days
And while the rest in their new coats and new hats
Shiver in their beds
You stand outside
And watch the clouds go by
In the same clothes that I met you in
In the first verse, the singer reminisces about times where crowds of people surrounded them, and celebrations were in abundance. However, the singer's reign is over, leaving them feeling lonely and isolated. The memories of parties and celebrations have lost their luster, and the singer is now left with faded decorations. Despite feeling alone, the singer asks the listener for help, requesting to ride on their back for a bit. In the chorus, the singer observes how quickly things change, especially the seasons. While everyone else is bundled up in their new winter clothes, the listener remains outside in the same clothes they met in, watching the clouds pass by.
Overall, the song appears to be about the disenchantment that can come from the passage of time. The singer remembers happy times that are now gone, leaving them feeling alone and disconnected. However, they find solace in the comfort of a friend, even if only for a short time. The chorus emphasizes how quickly things change, and how it can be difficult to keep up with the shift. The contrast between the listener's lack of new winter attire and the rest of the world's indicates a certain stubbornness to change that the singer admires.
