Sky High Honey
Matt Nathanson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bet you're laughing at some joke he told you
With his arm around your sunburn shoulders
I spent the morning with my face against the window seat
Looking down at all the things that got the best of me

No more late night drives to Boston
No more Cure songs to get lost in
No more taxis, subway tokens
Arms wide open, I'm sky high honey - gone

I take the streetcars around San Francisco
Get winks from the pretty boys down in The Castro
Through the turnstiles roll the chappy girls and the shabby dolls
I can't resist myself, I get their names, I never call

No more late night drives to Boston
No more Cure songs to get lost in
No more taxis, subway tokens
Arms wide open, I'm sky high honey - gone
I'm sky high honey

You wait too long, you never leave
And it feels like dying but still your heart beats

No more late night drives to Boston
No more Cure songs to get lost in
No more taxis, subway tokens

Arms wide open, I'm sky high honey - gone
I'm sky high honey - gone

Overall Meaning

In Matt Nathanson's song Sky High Honey, he expresses his feelings of heartbreak and loneliness as he watches his former lover move on with someone else. The lyrics depict a scenario where Nathanson watches the woman he loves with another man, laughing at his jokes with his arm around her. Nathanson then reminisces of the things he used to do with his ex-lover before the breakup such as taking late night drives to Boston, listening to Cure songs together, and taking taxis or subway tokens. However, he has since moved on, flying high in the sky and discovering the city of San Francisco. He takes streetcars, flirts with pretty boys in The Castro, and meets new people, particularly chappy girls and shabby dolls, without ever calling them back. The song ends with Nathanson feeling free and liberated as he leaves his past behind.
