Much of 2011 was spent on tour. In addition to visiting most of the US, he ventured to the UK, Netherlands and Germany in support of his 2010 release, the EP Living Proof. 2012 sees the release of his follow up album, Pieces, dropping 6/19.
Pieces is a collection of melancholic yet uplifting songs mixed with the modern, yet timeless production of Nashville engineer/producer Stephen Gause. From the first chord struck on the keys of opener “Emotionally Involved,” the listeners are drawn into Simons' world, led by his melodic turns and the driving intensity of the drums. Next, the lead single “Gone” lets his soulful side shine as Simons paints a picture of a man in a failing relationship, struggling to hold on as he’s realizing he needs to let go. “I’m so tired of being wrong, I’m gone.” The net is abuzz with praise for the song, which was released on March 20th and is currently streaming on mattsimonsmusic.com.
The album continues to demonstrate Simons’ abilities as a musician and a writer as he seamlessly shifts gears between songs. With the sweet “Miss You More,” his vocals soar into a lighter, higher range reminiscent of a ballad by artists such as Ben Folds or The Beatles. The one non-original on the album is a cover and re-working of Death Cab For Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into The Dark.” Simons’ piano replaces the original’s acoustic guitar, as various mellotron parts creep in to flesh out the sound, resulting in a hauntingly beautiful interpretation.
With its catchy melodies and relatable themes, Pieces maintains an inventive sound while appealing to a wide range of audiences. It's sure to become one of summer’s hottest releases.

Matt Simons Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Notice the sparks start to fly
Turn into heat
It's gonna get cute you and I
Comes time to leave
Unaware hours gone by
Done the best to stay
Out of my own way
Starts with a phone call
Sided with caution, three day wait
Certain we'll soon fall
Not gonna leave this up to fate
Picture together
All of my problems you erase
I don't hear a peep
Guess I'll get some sleep
Every time I drop, into pieces over nothing
At the top, with belief that was something
But its not, lie awake and I am wasting time here
Lying to my mind, lying to my mind
The very next weekend
My call finally gets returned
My will has been weakened
You'd think that by now I'd have learned
She says we can be friends
Bringing about my concern
Never had control
Back to feeling low
There is a so fine line
Built to give way by design
You walk at your own risk
Of being left out in cold
Or so I've been told
Guess I haven't been told, oh no
Everytime I drop, into pieces over nothing
At the top, with belief that was something
But its not, lie awake and I am wasting time here
Lying to my mind, lying to my mind
The song "Pieces" by Matt Simons talks about the ups and downs of a romantic relationship. The song starts with the excitement of meeting someone new, someone who ignites sparks and heat. As the relationship progresses, the singer tries to do his best to not get in the way of his own happiness. He speaks about the uncertainty that comes with starting a new relationship, and the need to be cautious to not leave it to fate. The lyrics also express the euphoria of finding someone who can erase all the problems and bring peace of mind, only to later reveal the heartache of being rejected and losing control.
The chorus talks about the singer's tendency to fall to pieces at times, and the feeling of wasting time lying to himself. He had believed that the relationship was something more, yet now he realizes it is not. The line, "there is a so fine line, built to give way by design," refers to the thin line between a romantic relationship and a friendship, and how it can quickly give way and become something else entirely. The singer is left feeling confused and uncertain, not sure if he has been told the truth or not.
