Suzanne
Matthew Fisher Lyrics

Fisher

The train pulled out the station as I waved Suzanne goodbye
And I turned around to start that lonely walk back home
And all the time I wondered what I'd noticed in her eye
When the whistle blew to tell me I was all alone
I guess I'll never know
It was all so long ago
But I wonder where Suzanne will be tonight
People tell me I'm wrong, they say I gotta change my ways
Well I'm changing but it's not the way they had in mind
There's one thing I know for sure - I can only be myself
And when that's not good enough I just get left behind
I guess that's the reason why
Suzanne told me goodbye
But I wonder where Suzanne will be tonight
The snow lies all around, I guess it must be cold outside
But the wind don't seem to blow, and my radio won't go
And the sound of falling snow is all that I can hear
I sometimes wish I knew

If she gets lonely too
And I wonder where Suzanne will be tonight

Overall Meaning

Matthew Fisher's song "Suzanne" describes the feeling of longing for a lost love. Upon leaving a train station after saying goodbye to Suzanne, the singer feels lonely and wonders about the significance of the look that Suzanne gave him. Throughout the song, Fisher uses imagery like the snow and the sound of falling snow to create a melancholy atmosphere that reflects the singer's feelings. Despite people telling him to change his ways, the singer recognizes that he can only be himself, and this seems to be the reason why Suzanne decided to let him go.

The song is notable for its haunting melody, which perfectly captures the sense of longing that the lyrics convey. It was released as a single in 1973 and was later included on Fisher's solo album "Journey's End" in 1979. The song's bittersweet tone and poignant lyrics have made it a favorite among fans of Fisher's work.

I wish there was a treaty between daughter & Horus

Suzanne takes you down
to the autumn of your madness
where organ parts were created
but credits not were given

And you go to court and ask them:
For those glitters should serve my pension
and the forty per cent you got out there
just sank beneath your honour like a stone...

(I must admit, the last two lines might be a bit ambivalent,
but I´m still holding my thumb up for Matthew´s courage).

Keith Reid (unfinished lyrics for a title-song of a non-existent
"French Connection"-prequel in which Reid plays a 70´style bourgois dope fiend)

Come on, just a tiny intermission here..(-:

Matthew Fisher has always been great at writing those nice hooks that make you sit up and pay attention. Love his music. I have this vinyl!!

I, too. Was hoping someone would have posted it on Tube, and voilà! Thank you rixarcade. Listening to "Pilgrim's Progress" brought me here. Fisher's not what you might call a great singer, but in that song, it fits perfectly, and PH/Gary did well letting him sing that. The vulnerability in Fisher's singing is the difference.

Mathew Fisher was the finest keyboard player of all British Rock. Long live MAF.

John LaStrada

Brilliant songwriter & great LP. Sang some fantastic tracks on Procol Harum & his voice/ melodies balanced the dark side of PH. This album is filled with terrific music. I sincerely believe if The Beatles needed a single fulltime keyboard player who could also sing & write great melodies -- Matthew Fisher was that musician. "Suzanne," "Play the Game," & later the rockier "Running From Your Love." Sad. Don't know why Fisher didn't sing lead on any of the reunion PH tracks. He should have.

Who played the drums on this superb track?

The book, "The Ghosts of a Whiter Shade of Pale: Procol Harum," by Henry Scott-Irvine, stated Matthew left Procol Harum after "A Salty Dog," primarily because he hated touring.
