Flashdance II
Matthew Good Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[monkey:] I am a very naughty monkey, and I really think this band is really shit
Ha ha. I'm naught.
[matt:] okay, just forget it man
[boy:] alright you slam your band !
[matt:] you're fired ! I told you! we really fucking hate this band, they suck!

She was a dancer I was out work
She had a law degree, I used to be a clerk
She takes her clothes off for the Japanese
I take my clothes off whenever it suits me
Barely living, but I'm living large
Well it ain't the ending that I fear
So lets go downtown
And walk around til you feel like the walls are caving in
You could sail beside the world tonight
They were taken, and they would ruin you
You could sell us every words tonight
She had a name like April spring
But her mother called her judy
She takes her clothes off for the Japanese
She says they're nicer than most would be
Barely living, but we're living large
Well ain't the middle that I fear
Put in the ground
And wait arund til you feel like the walls are caving in
You could sail beside the world tonight
And they were taken
And they would ruin you
Well her hate is still prettier in person
Prettier than words now, prettier than, prettier than me
You could sail beside the world tonight
You're turning into the biggest it all gets
And my head is so light
You're turning into the biggest it all gets
And my head is so light, so, so light
You could sail beside the world tonight
And they were taken, and they would ruin you

Well her hate is prettier in person
Prettier than words now, prettier than me...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Matthew Good's song Flashdance II seem to be about the singer's relationship with a stripper. The first verse talks about how the singer and the stripper have different professions - she is a dancer while he is out of work, and she has a law degree while he used to be a clerk. However, they both take their clothes off - she for Japanese clients and he whenever he wants to. The chorus is about going out and exploring the city, despite the fears of what might happen. The second verse is about the stripper, whom the singer calls April or Judy. He describes how she takes her clothes off for the Japanese, who she says are nicer than most people would be. The song ends with the repetition of "you could sail beside the world tonight" and reflects on how her hate is prettier in person.

The lyrics seem to be about the contrast between people's public and private lives - how they present themselves to society versus who they are behind closed doors. The singer and the stripper have different public personas, but share the same private experience of revealing themselves to others. The song takes a melancholic tone, suggesting that their lives may not be fulfilling but they are making the most of it. Ultimately, the repetition of "sail beside the world tonight" suggests that sometimes it's best to give into wanderlust and explore the unknown.

@coquitlam9 Like a lot of Matthew Good tracks, there is a depth to the lyrics that is hiding in plain sight. He manages to find poetry in the dirt between the bricks that other people just dismiss as grime. He sees things other don't see but when it's put into words, it can seem very obvious.
