The Devil's In Your Details
Matthew Good Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lie for me now, smile for me now
Sometimes my feet don't touch the ground
When you come around
The devil's in your details
My feet don't touch the ground
When you come around sunshine
Lie for me now, smile for me now
The devil's in your details
In Matthew Good's song "The Devil's In Your Details," the lyrics explore the complex nature of a relationship or friendship. The opening line is directed towards someone - perhaps a significant other or a close friend - and asks them not to pay attention to the outside opinions about the singer. The next line, "Lie for me now, smile for me now," could be interpreted in a few ways, but one possible meaning is that the singer is asking their companion to put on a happy face, even if they are feeling unhappy or struggling. They want their companion to present a false image of their relationship to the rest of the world. The repeated line "My feet don't touch the ground when you come around" suggests that the person being addressed has a powerful impact on the singer's emotional state, making them feel light and carefree.
The refrain, "The devil's in your details," is a tricky line to interpret, as it could mean a few different things. One interpretation is that the person being addressed is a bit deceptive or manipulative, hiding a darker side to their personality in smaller details or moments. Alternatively, it could be the opposite - the singer may be projecting their own demons onto the other person, seeing flaws and negativity where there is none. Overall, the lyrics suggest a complicated and possibly unhealthy relationship, where both parties are struggling to maintain a facade of happiness while grappling with deeper emotional issues.
