Truffle Pigs
Matthew Good Lyrics

Don't you even fucking think it
We're dead somehow
But somehow we're still breathing
The secret's out
But it's too loud to think it
Whatever drowns the counting machines out
And drive you
To eat
To eat shit
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Don't leave me now
Don't you even fucking think it
I'm not myself
But somehow I'm still being here
The secret's out
But it's too loud to think it
Whatever drowns the truffle pigs out
That drive you
And drive you
To eat
To eat shit
To eat
To eat shit
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Damn I'll bring them to their knees
Jen, I'll bring them to their knees
(Hey hey now)
To their knees
The Matthew Good Band's "Truffle Pigs" is a song that portrays the struggles of being stuck in a situation that seems hopeless, yet there is an internal drive that keeps pushing the person to keep going. The opening lines of "Don't fail me now, don't you even fucking think it, we're dead somehow, but somehow we're still breathing" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is refusing to give up or falter, despite the odds being against them. The repetition of the line "damn I'll bring them to their knees" reinforces the internal strength and determination the singer is feeling. It's as if they are saying "I'll show them what I'm made of, and I'll come out on top."
The chorus lyrics "whatever drowns the truffle pigs out, that drive you, and drive you, to eat shit" adds another layer of interpretation to the song. In the literal sense, truffle pigs are animals that are trained to hunt for truffles. However, the metaphorical meaning can be interpreted as anything that signals the pursuit of something valuable. The drowns in this context seems to be something that impedes the singer's progress, or something that they are forced to endure in order to achieve something. The line "drive you to eat shit" connotes that the singer is going through something unpalatable, that they would not have chosen themselves, but know they must power through it to reach their goal. Overall, the song speaks to the value of determination and the ability to keep pushing through difficult times.

When all my peers were listening to bubble gum pop I had Matt Good's lyrics holding my head up high. I would like to believe that even though he struggled with mental illness, his lyrics kept me sane and grounded. It was always nice to know that someone else felt as lost and confused as I did... If I could meet one artist and tell them how they changed me, it would be Matt. "It's amazing what velocity can do when human beings are in season" <3
