Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Matthew Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When all the world is a hopeless jumble
And the rain drops tumble on the ground
Heaven opens a magic lane

When all the clouds darken up the sky way
There's a rainbow highway to be found
Leaving from your window pane
To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyond the rain

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There's a land that I dreamed of once in a lullaby
Oh somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I'll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Oh somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

oh someday I'll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Oh somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly

Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

Overall Meaning

The song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a classic that originated from the movie "The Wizard of Oz." It is said to be one of the most covered songs in history. Matthew Morrison's version of the song starts by painting a picture of a hopeless atmosphere where everything seems to have gone wrong. In such a world, raindrops represent tears and a sign of more misfortunes, but he reminds us that heaven opens up a "magic lane" to offer escape.

The second stanza introduces a solution to the gloom as a rainbow highway that is beyond the clouds is introduced. The highway is said to lead to a place behind the sun, and it is an invitation to a magical place that is dreamt of in lullabies. The chorus takes us to the destination that is beyond the rainbow- a place that only exists in dreams. The dreamland is described as having clear blue skies and delivers what people dare to dream.

The final stanza repeats the sentiments desired in the chorus, that the singer will one day take advantage of the magic lane to go to the dreamland beyond the rainbow. He wants a place where he can escape from all his troubles, and where the worst things troubles turn into something as light as lemon drops. The song ends with a question- if birds can fly over the rainbow, why can't the singer do the same?
