His parents were divorced when he was only six years old. Later, his mother remarried and he moved to Canton, Ohio. Shortly after this, he met two of his best friends and future bandmates, Hoopes and Pittman. As a teenager Thiessen was well known for his very authentic goat impressions. The Beach Boys and The Beatles are two of his biggest musical influences. He likes wearing plaid, but doesn't like high-tops. He is loveable toward all animals (especially penguins). Thiessen is also known for being a prankster. Some of his favorite memories include getting massive sunburns and riding a yacht in Jacksonville, Florida. He now resides in Bolivar, Ohio. Some of his hardcore fans call him "Matty T" or "T-Sun."
In addition to being in Relient K, Thissen plays in his own solo piano project called Matthew Thiessen and the Earthquakes. The songs are typically emotional and very personal. He currently has 6 songs produced for many different CDs, including various compilation albums.
While primarily seen playing the guitar and the piano, it is said that Thiessen can play ten instruments. Other known instruments that he can play include bass, drums, bells, organ and trumpet.

Know that something needs to happen
But our mouths are locked
Tongue tied, closed tight, sewed shut, yup
I tried hard, but it just wouldn't come up
It's on the tip of my tongue
It's in the front of my mind
Finally the reality of the things to come
Pushed me to the edge
I jumped off the cliff into the abyss as I said,
I'm not trying to be a nuisance
I just think we can do better than this
That was simply my two cents
You can, you can take it or leave it
The conversation lingered on and on and
Before I knew it night had turned to dawn and
We'll be searching for the truth in all of it, ha
Are we debating just to win the argument?
'Cause none of us want to hear about when we go wrong
This song could easily be from me to you or me to John
'Cause I have to potential to be the guiltiest
My greatest strength is also my greatest weakness
I'm not trying to be a nuisance
I just think we can do better than this
That was simply my two cents
You can, you can take it or leave it
Let's think about this path that we're taking
Let's think about this future we're creating
Let's think about this life that is fading
Think about it, come on
Think about it, now
Let's think about the time that we're spending
Investing in monetary things that are ending
Let's think about it and let's think together and
Let's think about what we can do to make it better
I'm not trying to be a nuisance
I just think we can do better than this
That was simply my two cents
You can, you can take it or leave it
We can and we will do better than this
The song Nuisance by Matthew Thiessen is a reflection on the importance of communication and speaking one's truth. The opening lines lament the difficulty of expressing oneself when it is most crucial to do so, saying "here we are in the same old spot / know that something needs to happen / but our mouths are locked". The singer is frustrated that they cannot find the right words to say what they truly feel. However, as the conversation goes on, the singer feels pushed to speak up and takes a leap of faith, asserting "I'm not trying to be a nuisance / I just think we can do better than this / that was simply my two cents / you can, you can take it or leave it".
The song's bridge goes on to reflect on the toxic nature of debates and discussions, asking "are we debating just to win the argument? / 'cause none of us want to hear about when we go wrong". The singer recognizes that they themselves are not free of flaw and could easily be the subject of criticism as well. However, despite this, they are still willing to speak their mind and challenge others to do better. The song's final lines encourage listeners to think more critically about the world around us and make conscious decisions to create a better future.
Overall, Nuisance is a call to action for better communication and greater honesty in our interactions with one another. The song reflects on the fear and frustration that can come with speaking up, but ultimately celebrates the power of words and the impact they can have on the world.
