His parents were divorced when he was only six years old. Later, his mother remarried and he moved to Canton, Ohio. Shortly after this, he met two of his best friends and future bandmates, Hoopes and Pittman. As a teenager Thiessen was well known for his very authentic goat impressions. The Beach Boys and The Beatles are two of his biggest musical influences. He likes wearing plaid, but doesn't like high-tops. He is loveable toward all animals (especially penguins). Thiessen is also known for being a prankster. Some of his favorite memories include getting massive sunburns and riding a yacht in Jacksonville, Florida. He now resides in Bolivar, Ohio. Some of his hardcore fans call him "Matty T" or "T-Sun."
In addition to being in Relient K, Thissen plays in his own solo piano project called Matthew Thiessen and the Earthquakes. The songs are typically emotional and very personal. He currently has 6 songs produced for many different CDs, including various compilation albums.
While primarily seen playing the guitar and the piano, it is said that Thiessen can play ten instruments. Other known instruments that he can play include bass, drums, bells, organ and trumpet.
Wonderin
Matthew Thiessen Lyrics

Wonderin' 'bout the things you said to me
Wonderin' if these dreams will ever do
And I'm wonderin' bout the way I spend my days
Wonderin' if it's even worth the chase
Wonderin' if there's still a need from you
Uh we didn't know what to do
We were thinkin' it odd but we were thankin' our God
For the hope that He put down deep in our hearts
And yo, without a second to think
We was turned around and we were makin' that bank
And we was ridin' in style clockin' them miles
With the songs that He put down deep in our hearts
Well I'm wonderin' 'bout the road ahead of me
Wonderin' 'bout the things you said to me
Wonderin' if these dreams will ever do
And I'm wonderin' 'bout the way I spend my days
Wonderin' if it's even worth the chase
Wonderin' if there's still a need from you
Yeah, it's been a minute my friend
And you and I, we never thought it would end
But when we stopped to pause and opened the doors
There's some dreams that were put down deep in my heart
But hey, I'm always thinkin' of you
And I can see your influence in the things that I do
Thick and thin, forever my friend
'Cause there's a vine that was put down deep in our hearts
Well I'm wonderin' bout the road ahead of me
Wonderin' 'bout the things you said to me
Wonderin' if these dreams will ever do
And I'm wonderin' 'bout the way I spend my days
Wonderin' if it's even worth the chase
Wonderin' if there's still a need from you
Wonderin', wonderin'
Wonderin', wonderin'
Oh oh Wonderin', wonderin'
Yeah oh oh
Wonderin', wonderin'
Oh oh wonderin', wonderin'
Yeah oh oh
Uh we didn't know what to do
But you were lookin' at me and I was lookin' at you
We were thinkin' it odd but we were thankin' our God
For the hope that He put down deep in our hearts
And hey, if I could turn back time
I wouldn't touch a day I wouldn't shade the shine
'Cause I do know this, I won't be remiss with the memories locked away in my heart
(Locked away in my heart)
Well I'm wonderin' bout the road ahead of me
Wonderin' 'bout the things you said to me
Wonderin' if these dreams will ever do
And I'm wonderin' 'bout the way I spend my days
Wonderin' if it's even worth the chase
Wonderin' if there's still a need from you
Wonderin' bout the road ahead
Wonderin' 'bout the things we said
Wonderin' if these dreams of mine will ever gonna do
I'm wonderin' how I spend my days
Wonderin' if it's even worth the chase
Wonderin' if there's still a need from you
Wonderin' if we had a clue
In "Wonderin'" by Matthew Thiessen, the singer is reflecting on his life and the choices he's made. He ponders the road ahead of him and the things people have said to him, wondering if his dreams will ever come true. He also questions if the way he spends his days is worth it and if there's still a need for him from others. The lyrics suggest a sense of doubt and uncertainty about his future and whether the choices he's made are right.
The song also references a friend, who was once a key figure in the singer's life. The two were close and grateful for the hope God put in their hearts. They went their separate ways, but the singer still thinks of his friend and recognizes their influence in his life. The lyrics speak to the idea that even when people move apart, the memories and bonds formed between them can still hold a special place in their hearts.
In "Wonderin'," Thiessen uses introspective lyrics to explore the complexities of growing older and following one's dreams. It speaks to the idea that life is full of uncertainties, but the memories and people we encounter along the way can make the journey worth it.
