It was during his first year of college, that Matthew began playing guitar and writing songs. By Matthew's senior year, he was playing at every venue imaginable, from Fraternity houses to churches, and youth groups.
He signed an exclusive songwriting deal only a week after graduating and making the move to Nashville. Some other highlights were having songs placed on the platinum selling WoW 2002 project and also having his song, "Heart of Every Man recorded for the World Youth Day 2000 official soundtrack.
Matthew continued pursuing his dream of singing his own songs. Matthew had the opportunity to travel to universities across the country, and quickly began building up a steady following. With the help of Word Music and Extreme Writers Group, Matthew recorded an independent CD called, "Sellout," which caught the attention of Universal South Records.
Since signing with Universal South, He has released several albums, starting with "Happy" in 2003, "History" in 2005, and "Something to Say" in 2007; along with the re-release of Sellout in 2006. Curtain

I've been lost all afternoon
I've been imagining a future
In a world of only You
A world of only You
When the curtain falls down on me
I will be free
When the curtain falls down on me
I believe
I will be free
Free
I get so stuck here in the shadows
Where it's hard to escape this gravity
This life is heavy now but I know,
Yes I know
That someday
Gravity's gonna lose its grip on me
When the curtain falls down on me
I will be free
I will be free
When the curtain falls down on me
See I believe
I will be free
Free to fly-y-y away
I'm free to fly-y-y away
Well the show's not over, but I know how it ends
(I know how it ends)
When this dream
Becomes reality
It is no mystery
Where I will be
When the curtain falls down on me
I will be free
I will be free
When the curtain falls down on me
I will be free I will be free I will be
Free
When the curtain falls down on me
Well I believe
I will be free
Free to fly-y-y away
I'm free to fly-y-y away
Free to fly-y-y away
Free to fly-y-y away
Oh wow look at me now
Leaving the ground
Up in the clouds
So high
Up in the sky
It's time to fly
Fly-y-y away
I'm free to fly-y-y away
I'm free
To fly
The song "Curtain" by Matthew West is a reflection on hope and the freedom that awaits us when we leave this life. The lyrics talk about being lost in daydreams and imagining a future in a world of only God. The singer is yearning for something greater than the present, which is difficult to escape due to the heaviness of life. However, he knows that someday, gravity will lose its grip and he will be free. He sees death as the moment when the curtain falls down on him, releasing him from the chains of this world and allowing him to fly away.
The chorus is a declaration of that freedom, repeating the phrase "When the curtain falls down on me, I will be free." The repetition is a hopeful reminder of what awaits the singer beyond this life. The bridge of the song, "Well the show's not over, but I know how it ends, When this dream becomes reality, It is no mystery where I will be," speaks to the singer's faith and confidence that when he passes on, he will experience the freedom he longs for.
Overall, "Curtain" is a song that encourages listeners to look beyond the present struggles and find hope in the promise of a better future.
