Somebody That I Used to Know
Matthias Harris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Somebody
(I used to know)
Somebody
(Now you're just somebody that I used to know)

(I used to know)
(That I used to know)

(I used to know)
Somebody

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Matthias Harris reflects the aftermath of a romantic relationship that has ended. In the first verse, the singer reminisces about the happy moments they shared but also recalls feeling lonely while being together. The chorus speaks to the denial that the person has cut him off completely, wanting to still be friends, and not wanting to be someone hung up on the past. However, the singer still feels hurt and damaged by how the relationship ended. The second verse shifts perspective, and he recalls instances when the other party treated him poorly and took advantage of him, making him feel like he was always in the wrong. He now does not wish to live that way or read into the words his partner says any longer.

The song highlights how people can become addicted to certain emotions, similar to being addicted to drugs or alcohol, and how letting go of those emotions can be challenging. The singer even hints that perhaps he may have been happy being in the same situation because it was familiar. However, he now wants to let go of those emotions and move forward, even though it may lead to feeling like a stranger. The final part of the song reaffirms that the relationship is over and that the person has become just another person that the singer used to know, thus completing the cycle of moving on.

I can't believe I just discovered this amazing cover in 2019. Gosh! I was under a rock all this time, huh? Great work!!! Looking forward for your new acapella covers!

FloppyCheeks

I know this is a bit old, but he won't be making any more. He's apparently famous now the last video he uploaded was him going on tour. I'm just glad he finally made it. And not doing acapellas with a towel on his head.

Catscanfly

@FloppyCheeks Oh really??? Woooooow!!! I didn't know him much, but it's good that he's going on tour and showing his talent everywhere. Naa it's cool. Even if it's old, happy news is still happy, right? ^-^ Thanks for sharing the good news, my friend. Plus, I got to watch this amazing cover again thanks to your reply haha

Matthias Harris

@Catscanfly you guys are so sweet. I really appreciate the support, but I can assure you im not famous now 😂
I stopped doing acapella covers because YouTube threatened me with copyright infringement legal action, and that's what shut me down. Makes no sense to me because lots of people seem to do it but....yeah.... No more from me I'm afraid.
