His first album, called simply 'Reim', was released soon thereafter. Though a household name in much of Europe, he faced a tough situation in trying to follow-up such a major hit. By 1999, another nine albums had been released by the Polydor label. His album 'Zauberland' (English: 'Land of Magic') was also released as an international version in Canada under the title 'Wonderland'. In 2000, Matthias Reim released 'Wolkenreiter' (English: 'Rider of the Clouds'), his first of four CDs released on the EMI label. He unexpectedly made a return to massive success with 'Unendlich' in February 2013, a long-delayed album that ended up reaching number one.

In Matthias Reim's song "Rampenlicht" ("Spotlight" in English), he reflects on the experience of performing on stage and the impact it has had on his life. After a show, he returns to his hotel feeling exhausted but happy, thinking about someone he met who left an impression on him. Reim acknowledges the pressure of a performance, wanting to prove himself to the audience and feeling nervous about it, but he also values the connection he has with his fans and how his music tells a story that resonates with them.
The chorus of the song reveals the central message: even though the spotlight only shines on someone briefly, it can still have a profound impact on their life. Reim sings that he has lived his whole life with the goal of being on stage, and that the stories and songs he shares with his fans are also a part of their story. He concludes by acknowledging that while life goes on, the connection he shares with his fans through music is something that will stay with them forever.
Overall, "Rampenlicht" is a song about the joy and exhaustion of performing, and the way that music can connect people and make a lasting impact.

Nach dem Auftritt
die Zeit verging so schnell
geh ich müde aber glücklich
zurück in mein Hotel
und ich denk an dich da unten
Dass ich dir begegnet bin
und das Strahlen in deinen Augen
gibt mir nicht aus dem Sinn
After the performance, time moves so quickly, and I go back tired but happy to my hotel. At that moment, I remember meeting you down there, and the radiance in your eyes stays with me.
So ein Auftritt
ist ein ganz schön hartes Ding
denn ich weiß, dass du da unten
erst mal sehen willst, ob ich's bring
und das Lampenfieber schnürt
mir jedes Mal die Kehle zu
doch du gibst mir zu verstehen
es ist ok, was ich hier tu
A performance is a tough assignment, but I know that you are watching me down there, waiting to see if I can deliver. Though stage fright clutches my throat every time, you let me know that it's okay, what I'm doing here.
Doch für ein paar Sekunden
streifte dich das Rampenlicht
und du denkst noch
'Der da oben sieht mich sicher nicht...'
But for a few moments, the spotlight grazed you, and you thought, 'That guy up there surely doesn't see me...'
All die Jahre
hab ich nur dafür gelebt
hier oben mal zu stehen
und ich wusste, dass es geht
Diese songs und die Geschichten
die ich dir von mir erzähl
sind ein wenig auch die deinen
und das bedeutet mir soviel
All these years, I've lived only for this moment, to stand up here, and I knew I would get here. These songs and the stories I tell you about myself are a little bit yours too. That means so much to me.
Morgen bin ich
wieder auf der Autobahn
es geht weiter
die Zeit hält niemals an
doch was hier mit uns geschehen ist
das nimmt uns keiner mehr
ohne Worte, einfach Freunde
und was wollen wir noch mehr
Tomorrow, I'll be back on the highway because time never stops. However, what has happened between us here, no one can take it away. We don't need words; we are just friends, and what more could we want?
