Hurricane
Matzo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slamming doors, uncover lies
Shifting loyalties and tearful eyes
A blank facade I try to sustain
Hiding from a twisting hurricane

Your angry letters slipped under my door
Words screaming up and off the floor
Through the storm I hear your voice
Does it all come down to my choice?

Dark skies shifting, heavy rain lifting,
A hurricane is twisting, throughout the night
Black wings beneath, history repeating
A moment, fleeting, through outside your eyes

Hurricane

I hear no sound, the storm, must be at rest
How easily I fall for the same old test
Staring through cloudy windows
Listening intently to the sounds we love

Dark skies shifting, heavy rain lifting
A hurricane is twisting, throughout the night

Black wings beneath, history repeating
A moment, fleeting, through outside your eyes

Overall Meaning

In "Hurricane," Matzo sings about being caught up in a tumultuous storm of emotions in a relationship. The slamming of doors represents the constant arguments and disagreements, while the shifting loyalties suggest that trust has been broken. The blank facade that the singer tries to uphold shows their attempts to maintain some semblance of control as they endure the turbulence of the relationship. Hiding is a major theme of the song, as the singer is trying to avoid the painful impact of the twisting hurricane - this could represent the actual physical hurricane as well as the emotional turmoil that is felt in the relationship.

The second verse delves deeper into the emotional impact, as the singer mentions the angry letters that have been left, showing the instability of the relationship. The storm outside is mirrored by the internal storm the singer is facing, with black wings and history repeating indicating a constant cycle of pain and tension that is felt throughout the relationship. The bridge shows the singer's acceptance of the situation, with the storm eventually subsiding and the realization that they will continue falling for the same tests or traps. The cloudy windows represent the distorted view of reality, while the sounds they love underscore the positive aspects of the relationship that they are trying to hold onto. Overall, "Hurricane" is a song about the tumultuous, painful nature of a relationship that has become trapped in an endless cycle of suffering.

The ground this album covers in its journey is nothing short of astounding, and this song might be its crown achievement. Mat Zo is less a pusher of squares and twister of knobs than he is a painter of sound and a ferryman, gently helping your brain to navigate its vast sea of consciousness and charting a path to its higher states. His production skills are to 2020 what this album was to 2013: innovative, trend setting, and prophetic. Protect this man at all costs; he's an international treasure.

This youngster is a musical genius.. wide range of stuff all quality. Love the trancey stuff he made.. but it’s all quality!

I rediscovered this song earlier after having not listened to it for 7 years, and it still hits the same wonderful spot. It really reminds me of the 90s progressive house trailblazers that came from Sasha, Digweed and The Future Sound of London, albeit with far better production and a modern sound - but still the addictive rhythms and enchanting melodies and vocal samples. So glad I rediscovered this after all this time. So fucking good.
