Thanks for the memory
(fade in)
Of candlelight and wine, castles on the Rhine,
Of candlelight and wine, castles on the Rhine,
The Parthenon, and moments on the Hudson River Line
The Parthenon, and moments on the Hudson River Line
How lovely it was!
How lovely it was!

Thanks for the memory
Thanks for the memory
(fade out)
Of rainy afternoons, swinging Harlem tunes,

Of motor trips and burning lips and burning toast and prunes
(fade out)

Overall Meaning

The song "Thanks For The Memory" is an ode to memories that have made a profound impact on a person's life. The song begins by referencing memories of "candlelight and wine, castles on the Rhine", "The Parthenon", and "moments on the Hudson River Line". These moments represent different points in time that are inextricably linked to people and places that one might have encountered earlier in life. The singer then goes on to thank the people who have made these memories possible, reminiscing on the lovely times they've shared.

The lyrics go on to detail other memories that have made their mark, such as "rainy afternoons, swinging Harlem tunes", "motor trips", and "burning lips and burning toast and prunes". While some of these memories may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of life, they are important because they represent a time when the singer was happy and surrounded by the people they loved. The final refrain is a poignant expression of gratitude for all these memories, which have shaped the singer's life.

Taty Star

From where did she take this song 'The continental'? Funny song...

Mario Kaouklis

It originally appeared in an old Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie, The Gay Divorcee, way back in the early 1930's. In the movie it's an extended piece packed with dance scenes (as cut out paper dolls of themselves are going round and round on a turntable). Well worth a viewing if you can find it.
