World Without Love
Mavericks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please lock me away
And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide
With my loneliness

I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love
Birds sing out of tune
And rain clouds hide the moon

I'm OK here I'll stay
With my loneliness
I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love

So I wait and in a while
I will see my true love smile
She may come I know not when
When she does I know

So baby until then
Please lock me away
And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide

With my loneliness
I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love
So I wait and in a while

I will see my true love smile
She may come I know not when
When she does I know
So baby until then

Please lock me away
And don't allow the day
Here inside, where I hide
With my loneliness

I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love
I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love

I don't care what they say
I won't stay in a world without love

Overall Meaning

The Mavericks' "World Without Love" is a ballad that tells the story of a lover who suffers from loneliness and is willing to be locked away rather than living in a world without love. The pain of feeling alone is likened to being in a prison cell, and the only way the character can cope with the pain is to avoid the outside world. The lyrics express a longing for a true love to come and make everything better. The line "She may come I know not when, when she does I know" suggests that hope keeps the character going, despite the discomfort of living in isolation. The song's overall message, therefore, is one of hope in the face of loneliness and the belief that love will come and change everything.

In addition to its powerful message, "World Without Love" has an interesting backstory. It was originally written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon in 1963, but the song was not released by The Beatles until 1977. Peter and Gordon were the first to record it and make it a hit in the same year it was written. In 1995, The Mavericks recorded a version of the track, which was included in their album "Music for All Occasions." The song was well-received and became a hit in many countries.
