All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down
Mavericks Feat. Flaco Jimenez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't sleep a wink anymore
Ever since you first walked out the door
Then I just started drinkin' to forget
But I don't think the worst has happened yet

All you ever do is bring me down
Making me a fool all over town
They all wonder why I wear a frown
That's ?cause honey all you do is bring me down

It's funny how my whole world fell apart
I think I saw it coming from the start

I tried to tell myself that you'd be true
But I expected way too much of you

Overall Meaning

The Mavericks' "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" is a country-rock song that deals with themes of heartbreak, betrayal, and denial. The first verse begins with the singer's admission that they are unable to sleep since their partner left them. They then reveal that they have begun drinking to try and forget, but they fear that things may get worse. The chorus then states the song's title, implying that the singer blames their ex-partner for their misery. The second verse continues with the singer reflecting on how they saw the end of the relationship coming but refused to believe that their partner would betray them. The song ends on a bitter note as they realize that they expected too much from their former lover.

The lyrics of the song are a powerful representation of the pain and confusion that comes with heartbreak. The chorus, in particular, is catchy and relatable, expressing the idea that sometimes all it takes is one person to bring you down. The song's arrangement is classic honky-tonk, with upbeat guitar riffs and rollicking piano. The song's liveliness contrasts with the song's lyrics, further emphasizing the singer's sense of betrayal and distress.

I LOVED these guys back in the 90's and had a major crush on Raul. ๐Ÿ˜ I could listen to The Mavericks all day and never get sick of hearing him sing. Look up his cover of "Crying" by Roy Orbison. Chills.
