He also appeared on his own television shows, sometimes performing comedy sketches between songs. Shows he presented included the gameshow Family Fortunes.

According to the You Need Hands Songfacts, Max went into showbusiness more or less by accident as a comedy impressionist, but later picked up the basics of songwriting.

My old dad used to sing this to me and my sister when we were kids. He died Xmas morning 91. Still miss him every Xmas day. Can't possibly hear this and not think of him. God bless him.
Ps he also read Max Bygraves autobiography. I still have his copy. Its a real real walk back to days gone by and simpler times. Any one of an age would like it.

My dad used to sing this song to my sisters and me when we were on our way from Zambia Kitwe to visit our relatives in RSA on holiday. The heat and humidity was incredible miss and love Pops xxx

My big sister (by 8 yrs) sent this to me. Our mom passed when we were young (5 & 12) so she was sort of a mom figure as well. I don't remember, but I think she had the record ⏺️. At any rate, EVERY time she played it I cried 😭. So, not surprisingly, as big sisters are wont to do, she played it often😉, got to torment that little sister, you know 😂. Good memories, none the less😊 She also used to surprise me with those great big coiled kind of lollipops, like you would get at a fair 🍭. Good memories for sure❣️

My childhood brought back to life… a simpler time, quite a bit of hardship still, but, my goodness! Our enjoyment of simple, easily achieved things was so much stronger. Can I suggest, a better time?

Probably not 🙂 my background is VERY similar to yours. My mom passed when I was 5, brother was 8, sister was 12. But I have great memories of the area I grew up in. In fact I go there on Google Maps all the time. Was just texting about it with my little (step)sister last night 🙂.

Oh, this was not a forgotten tune. I learned it as a kid from Jerry Mahoney, on the Jerry Mahoney Show in the U.S. in the '60's, and I never forgot the words. He would end it with a tear in his eye.

I've heard this song and it was the last song that Ed Baer played on his final "Pop Rewind" show as heard on WHUD back in June. Ed Baer was a great DJ, and I remember him when he was on WCBS-FM when he did his fill-in show for years. I missed him so much, and in the mortal words of Ed Baer, "We'll have lunch sometime."

I am very happy to hear that you and I hadn't forgotten this great but almost forgotten tune. This version was played pretty much every week on the BBC Radio show "Childrens Favourites" here in the UK. :-)

I remember Max and his antics from PBS when I was younger. Always did love this song. It's been stuck in my head for the last few days, so I had to see if it were here. My favorite version is still Paul Winchell's Jerry Mahoney from the Jerry Mahoney show. Don't think there's too many people who even remember the show. Kinda like Buffalo Bob. Oopps! should pay more attention to the other post. At least one person remembers Jerry Mahoney. The 60's....God, has it been that long ago?

As you probably know, Ed Baer has passed away this week at 82 years old, and his last song ever played on WHUD’s “Pop Rewind” was this one. He will surely be missed.

SuzNews... I learned it on the same show. Paul Winchell, Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smith. "It's Winchell-Mahoney Time"! Paul was also the voice for many cartoon characters including "Dick Dastardly" from "Wacky Racers" & "Dastardly & Muttley in ther Flying Machines" as well as the original "Tigger" of "Winnie the Pooh".
