What's your favourite Disney sequel?

Either Lion King 2, or Aladdin and the King of Thieves.

Growing up my favorite or at least the most memorable was Lady and the Tramp 2. Odd choice, I know

My favourite Disney sequel is Cinderella III: A Twist in Time! I think it’s great! I would love to see you do a review of it!

Perfect choice! I actually reviewed that a few weeks ago. I was so pleasantly surprised!

I do like the sequel to The Little Mermaid! Having the majority of the original cast come back (minus a few) added to the appeal for me, and Tara Strong does a fantastic performance as Melody. Plus I love the songs “Down to the Sea” and “For A Moment”! Though I do prefer the original, always. Ariel here almost becomes just like her father, which reminds me a bit of Simba’s arc in the sequel to The Lion King. Which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s a familiar plot point for Disney sequels and I would’ve liked to see a new take on the Disney sequel formula.
I would say go watch the original film if you haven’t watched it in a while! While this may not be the case for you, I do notice that many people find it overdone because there are so many half-baked covers and analyses of it done by other people that get a lot of views and attention but don’t fully dive into the meaning of it all and honestly get a lot of it wrong based on what’s actually written in the script and presently on screen. Just so many shallow recreations of a source material that’s a lot more deeper than what’s on the surface level. It’s like the world is collectively misremembering what happens in the film based on a memory of a memory, at least that’s what I’ve noticed. I’ve seen this happen for other Disney classics too like Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty. The Little Mermaid often gets a bad rap since people usually don’t seek it out as often anymore compared to the more recent Disney films. and I must note I’m /very/ biased, in that I have the entire film memorized and wrote my undergraduate thesis on it 😅 for many personal reasons, it’s my favorite film. And it truly saved my life. The Little Mermaid, to me, is a really solid film with a really solid message!
Anyway, the sequel kinda does a reverse version of the story (almost like Moana? there are some parallels there!). But for what it was, I still enjoyed it.
I do also really love the prequel TV series and the prequel film (The Little Mermaid 3: Ariel’s Beginning. Sally Field is in this as Marina del Rey and she’s FABULOUS!), though there are some plot inconsistencies between the canon of the both. (fun fact: Triton and Ursula are meant to be siblings in the original script of the first film, which was retained for the Broadway version!). The stakes also aren’t as high in the sequel, which makes sense since Melody is younger than Ariel was in her story. I would’ve loved to see a sequel film that takes place before Melody of how Ariel adjusts to living life as a human princess after living as a mermaid princess for 16 or so years (in my mind, since we don’t know this for sure, at least a year if not more has passed from when Ariel gets her legs back again to when she gets married to Eric). I wish this sequel explored that more!

The story isn’t very original, pretty much a reverse of the first film, but still enjoyable. You’re right about the soundtrack, it really is so darn catchy. My personal favourite is probably Tip and Dash’s song. Morgana is great too, sooooo much sass.
