He founded the Palast Orchester in 1986, while he studied at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1988 to 1995 as a baritone opera singer. The career of him and his orchestra began with a Schlager entitled "Kein Schwein ruft mich an" ("No pig calls on Me", 1992), a pop song in 1920's style, and the film "Der bewegte Mann" in 1994.
He writes original music, including film music, and also creates covers of well known modern pop songs in a 1920s-1930s band style, including such songs as Britney Spears' "Oops!... I Did It Again". Many people discover the band via their pop covers, and go on to be fans of their original music. Sometimes he takes over roles in operas.
In the year 2005 he had his first concert in New York City's Carnegie Hall.
He performed at Marilyn Manson's wedding on December 3, 2005.
Mein Kleiner Grüner Kaktus
Max Raabe & Palast Orchester Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
hollari, hollari, hollaro!
Was brauch' ich rote Rosen, was brauch' ich roten Mohn,
hollari, hollari, hollaro!
hollari, hollari, hollaro!
Der fiel soeben runter, was halten Sie davon?
Hollari, hollari, hollaro!
Er fiel mir aufs Gesicht obs' glauben oder nicht
jetzt weiß ich, daß Ihr kleiner grüner Kaktus sticht.
Bewahr'n Sie Ihren Kaktus gefälligst anderswo,
hollari, hollari, hollaro!"
The song "Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus" by Max Raabe & Palast Orchester tells the story of a unique love for a small green cactus that stands outside on the balcony. The singer says the cactus is enough for him and he does not need red roses or red poppies. The unique feature of this cactus is that it serves as a protector from bad people. If someone speaks something rude or unacceptable, the singer calls upon his little green cactus to sting them.
The story takes a turn when Herr Krause from the neighbor's house comes knocking on the singer's door, saying that the cactus fell on him and he got hurt. Herr Krause suggests that the singer should keep his cactus somewhere else. This twist in the story does not stop the singer from loving his little green cactus. The song highlights the idea that things we love and possess can have flaws and imperfections that need to be dealt with. The lyrics also convey the idea of individuality and uniqueness, where what may not seem valuable to others can hold great value for us.

Blumen im Garten, so zwanzig Arten
Von Rosen, Tulpen und Narzissen
Leisten sich heute die feinsten Leute
Das will ich alles gar nicht wissen
Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus
Steht draußen am Balkon
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
Was brauch' ich rote Rosen?
Was brauch' ich roten Mohn?
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
Und wenn ein Bösewicht
Was Ungezogenes spricht
Dann hol' ich meinen Kaktus
Und der sticht, sticht, sticht
Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus
Steht draußen am Balkon
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
Man find't gewöhnlich
Die Frauen ähnlich
Den Blumen, die sie gerne haben
Doch ich sag' täglich
Das ist nicht möglich
Was sollen die Leut'
Sonst von mir sagen?
Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus
Steht draußen am Balkon
Holla-hollari, holla-hollari, holla-hollaro
Was brauch' ich rote Rosen?
Was brauch' ich roten Mohn?
Holla-hollari, holla-hollaro, holla-hollaro
Und wenn ein Bösewicht
Was Ungezogenes spricht
Dann hol' ich meinen Kaktus
Und der sticht, sticht, sticht
Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus
Steht draußen am Balkon
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
Piek, piek, piek, piek
Piek, piek, piek, piek

Flowers in the garden, about twenty kinds
Of roses, tulips and daffodils
The finest people afford themselves today
I don't want to know any of that
My little green cactus
Standing outside on the balcony
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
What do I need red roses?
What do I need red poppy seeds?
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
And if a bad guy
What naughty speaks
Then I'll get my cactus
And it stings, stings, stings
My little green cactus
Standing outside on the balcony
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
One finds it common
Similar to women
The flowers they like to have
But I say daily
This is not possible
What should the people
Otherwise say of me?
My little green cactus
Standing outside on the balcony
Holla-hollari, holla-hollari, holla-hollaro
What do I need red roses?
What do I need red poppy seeds?
Holla-hollari, holla-hollaro, holla-hollaro
And if a bad guy
What naughty speaks
Then I'll get my cactus
And it stings, stings, stings
My little green cactus
Standing outside on the balcony
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
Piek, piek, piek, piek
Piek, piek, piek, piek
Today at four
Knock on the door
Well, visit so early in the day?
It was Herr Krause
From the neighboring house
He says, “Forgive me if I ask
You have a cactus
On your little balcony?
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
It just fell down
What do you make of it?
Hollari, hollari, hollaro
It fell on my face
Believe it or not
Then I know that your little green cactus is stinging
Preserve your cactus
Kindly elsewhere
Hollari, hollari, hollaro"

No le entiendo un pepino, pero me encanta su show, su orquesta, su actitud, y me hace sentir una mezcla de admiración y ternura por los gestos pícaros y divertidos en sus interpretaciones.
