The Party
Max Webster Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cats in the bag
The neighbors holler
This party's higher
Than the Eiffel tower

We're all here to be reckless
We're all sleazy and easy to please
Dreamers and schemers on the loose

We're all here for a celebration
The madcap scene and the max machine
And the friends you see go up in smoke
And this heel toe dance song tour de force

Climbing a cloud
Climbing a cloud
Climbing a cloud
Put a little life on the line

Here's Lucy
She's choosy of who calls her on the phone
She's from a very rich foreign family
But displaced 'cause of rivalry at home

Now Daphne is the orphan
Still searching for her roots
She likes concert blisters and leather boots
And knows one fact her act is to get loose

Now we're just musicians
Here to thin the thickness of your skin

Show us your body
Show us your curls
Show us your tour de force
Show us your thrills
Keep that smile on your face
This is the best offer you've had so far

We're innocent, we're naive
In the cabarets we get our veins wet
In the saloons we hassle the richest guests
In the climb we're breathless above the rest

Climbing a cloud

Climbing a cloud
Climbing a cloud

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Max Webster's song The Party revolve around the idea of a wild and reckless party where people are gathered to celebrate and have a good time without worrying about the consequences of their actions. The opening lines of the song, "Cats in the bag, the neighbors holler, this party's higher than the Eiffel tower" set the mood for the rest of the song. The first line suggests that they have something to hide or to protect, while the second one emphasizes the intensity of the party. The lyrics also suggest that the people present at the party are dreamers and schemers who are willing to take risks and push boundaries.

The song introduces several characters, such as Lucy and Daphne, who are not afraid to stand out and be themselves. Lucy is portrayed as someone who is from a very rich foreign family but has been displaced due to rivalry at home. Daphne, on the other hand, is an orphan who is still searching for her roots. Both characters exhibit an unapologetic attitude towards their lifestyles, which again highlights the theme of taking risks and being oneself.

The chorus, "Climbing a cloud, put a little life on the line" further emphasizes the idea of taking risks and living life to the fullest. The repeated line "climbing a cloud" suggests that they are reaching for something unreachable or unattainable, but are still willing to take the risk.

Overall, Max Webster's The Party is a song that celebrates reckless abandon and encourages people to take risks and live their lives to the fullest.

Never saw Max.....but saw Kim 5 times...from a bar to Maple Leaf Gardens. At the Gardens it was new years eve and they backed up Saga and simply blew them off the stage. Imagine 15,000 ppl saying in perfect unison "here's Lucy, she's choosy who calls her on the phone..." It was one of the single greatest concert moments in My life. Chills.

My sister Daphne is doing well by the way.
She's on her 5th marriage and has 6 kids.
She's recovering from her cocaine addiction and thanks you all for your thoughts.
The 4 years she did in jail really helped her dry out as well.
