Dialogue
Maxime Le Forestier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"Avec ce que j'ai fait pour toi",
Disait le père,
"Je sais, tu me l'as dit déjà.",
Disait l'enfant.
"J'en demandais pas tant.
Je suis là pour
Tourner autour
De cette terre
Tant que je suis vivant."

"Vivant, qui t'a donné la vie ?",
Disait le père.
"Si c'est pour la passer ici",
Disait l'enfant,
"Tu as perdu ton temps.
Si les fumées,
Dans les rues fermées,
Te sont légères,
Moi j'ai besoin du vent."

"Et si tu venais à mourir ?",
Disait le père.
"On est tous là pour en finir",
Disait l'enfant,
"Mais peu importe quand.
Je ne suis né
Que pour aller
Dessous la terre
Et l'oublier avant."

"Nous, on vivait pour quelque chose.",
Disait le père.
"Vous êtes morts pour pas grand chose.",
Disait l'enfant.
"Je n'en ai pas le temps
Si, pour garder
Les mains liées,
Il faut la guerre.
Moi je m'en vais avant."

"Ce monde, je l'ai fait pour toi.",
Disait le père.
"Je sais, tu me l'as dit déjà.",
Disait l'enfant.
"J'en demandais pas tant.
Il est foutu
Et je n'ai plus
Qu'à le refaire

Un peu plus souriant
Pour tes petits enfants."

Overall Meaning

The song Dialogue by Maxime Le Forestier presents a conversation between a father and his child, where they share their perspective on life and the world they live in. The father reminds the child of everything he has done for him, but the child responds with a sense of detachment and an unconventional approach to life. The child believes that he is here only to turn around the earth while he is alive and he needs wind instead of smoke-filled streets. Even death doesn't scare him, as he believes he was born to go under the earth and forget it. The child ultimately rejects the father's world and values, stating that he doesn't have time to sit and wait for a better world, and he will leave before that.

Through this dialogue, the song presents opposing visions of life and the world – one that is traditional, predictable, and obedient to established norms, and the other, that is non-conformist, imaginative and chooses its path. The song hints at the generation gap between the father and his child, where the former sees his life's purpose in shaping the world for his offspring, and the latter resists and tries to find his own way. It also draws attention to the environmental problems, the futility of wars and the need for a more positive future for the next generations.

Je ne pense pas en effet que l'on sera à la hauteur du chemin parcourus. mais à son époque je ne dis pas il y a eu une évolution des façons de voir les choses. à chaque périodes ses combats et ses idéaux.
