In 1965, Le Forestier formed a duo (Cat et Maxime) with his sister Catherine. Playing at cabaret venues on Paris' Left Bank, the pair met and formed a friendship with Georges Moustaki. They were amongst the first artists to cover a number of songs by Moustaki - including Ma Liberté and Ma Solitude. In 1968, Catherine joined Moustaki as a backing singer. Le Forestier began to focus on songwriting and composed Ballade pour un traître which was recorded and released by the French/Italian singer and actor, Serge Reggiani.
Le Forestier continued as part-time singer/songwriter during his military service (beginning 1969) with a parachute regiment (the inspiration for the song Parachutiste). He recorded two songs: "Cœur de Pierre, Face de Lune", and La Petite Fugue.
His military service ending September 1970, Le Forestier refocused on his musical career. He developed a folksy style which was enormously popular in the 1970s and '80s. His first album Mon Frère, released in 1973, contains several pieces that have entered French folklore, including the title song Mon frère, San Francisco, Comme un arbre and Education sentimentale. He toured extensively, both in France and abroad. In 1976, he toured in 14 cities in the USSR. Recently he has gained particular acclaim for his reworkings of the songs of Georges Brassens.
Mourir pour une nuit

Mourir, mourir, mourir
Pour une nuit,
Pour un après-midi.
Mourir, mourir
Comme on s'endort,
Faire la nique à la mort.
Au fond d'un mausolée,
Pour discuter ce soir
Avec les feux follets.
Mourir pour un baiser,
Mourir pour cette main
Qui viendra caresser
Mon corps demain matin.
{Refrain}
Mourir les yeux ouverts
Pour mieux te regarder
Et voir dans tes yeux verts
Une larme couler.
Mourir pour le plaisir
De renaître demain,
Mourir dans un sourire
Et te comprendre enfin.
{Refrain}
Mourir comme on s'endort
Mourir comme on s'enivre
Pour changer de décor
Et puis renaître et vivre.
The lyrics to Maxime Le Forestier's song Mourir pour une nuit express the idea of the desire to sacrifice oneself for a moment of passion or joy. The repeated phrase "mourir" (to die) creates a sense of urgency and longing for a temporary escape from life's mundanity. This desire is seen in the lines "mourir pour un regard" (to die for a glance), "mourir pour un baiser" (to die for a kiss), and "mourir pour cette main / Qui viendra caresser / Mon corps demain matin" (to die for the touch of a lover). The idea of death as an escape is further emphasized in the chorus, which repeats "mourir" and describes the desire to "faire la nique à la mort" (to defy death).
However, the lyrics also suggest that through this escape, there is a hope for rebirth and understanding. The lines "mourir pour le plaisir / De renaître demain" (to die for the pleasure of being reborn tomorrow) and "mourir dans un sourire / Et te comprendre enfin" (to die with a smile and finally understand you) express the idea that through dying, one can gain a new perspective and greater understanding of oneself and others.
Overall, the song expresses the conflicting desires for escape and rebirth, and the longing for a moment of passion or joy that is worth dying for.
