2) Maxine Brown was an American country music singer and member of The Browns.
1) Maxine Ella Brown (born 18 August 1939, in Kingstree, South Carolina) is an American soul singer.
She began singing as a child, performing with two New York based gospel groups when she was a teenager. In 1960, she signed with the small Nomar record label, who released the smooth soul ballad "All in My Mind" late in the year. The single became a hit, climbing to number two on the R&B charts (number 19 pop), and it was quickly followed by "Funny", which peaked at number three. Brown was poised to become a star, and she moved to ABC-Paramount in 1962, but left the label within a year and signed to the New York based, uptown soul label, Wand, in 1963.
Brown recorded her best work at Wand, having a string of moderate hits for the label over the next three years. Among these were the Carole King / Gerry Goffin song "Oh No Not My Baby", which reached number 24 on the pop charts; "It's Gonna Be Alright"; and several duets with Chuck Jackson. However, the label focused much of their attention on Dionne Warwick, leaving Maxine Brown to toil in semi-obscurity.
In 1969, she left Wand and signed first with Commonwealth United and then Avco Records, but her later recordings met with little commercial success. Despite her lack of hits, Brown is acknowledged as one of the finest R&B vocalists of her time, capable of delivering soul, jazz, and pop with equal aplomb.
2) Maxine Brown (April 27, 1931 – January 21, 2019) was an American country music singer who was originally a member of the successful 1950s trio the Browns, before a brief solo career.
I Cry Alone
Maxine Brown Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When no one else can hear me
When friends come by to cheer me
I smile and say I feel okay
But I cry alone
Each lonely night without you
But when they talk about you
And here in my room
When no one else can find me
I lock the door behind me
And I cry
Please come home, come back to me
Oh how I long to kiss you
If friends say I don't miss you
They just don't know
How I cry alone
If friends say I don't miss you
They just don't know
How I cry alone
The lyrics of Maxine Brown's "I Cry Alone" depicts a person who is struggling with loneliness and heartbreak caused by the absence of a significant other. The singer reveals that she pretends to be okay and happy when in the company of friends, but in reality, she cries alone every lonely night without her partner. She further explains that even when friends talk about her lover, she makes believe she never grieves.
The second verse of the song is even more heart-wrenching as it reveals a picture of the singer in her room, where she locks the door and cries her heart out. It is a place where she feels safe, where no one else can find her, and where she reveals her true emotions. The lyrics end with the plea for her lover to come back to her, expressing her desire to kiss her and her frustration that her friends do not understand the depth of her grief.
Overall, the lyrics of "I Cry Alone" communicate the pain and struggles that come with heartbreak, loneliness, and the desire for the return of a loved one. It emphasizes the need for community and emotional support as well as an honest expression of emotions to move through difficult times.

Superior to the Ruby & the Romantics version, in my view.

Great version but I prefer Dionne’s and Ruby’s. Scepter/Wand shamelessly saved money by using the exact same instrumental and vocal track on both the Dionne and Maxine versions. Give them both a listen. My guess is that Dionne’s was the demonstration record.
