1) Maxine Ella Brown (born 18 August 1939, in Kingstree, South Carolina) is an American soul singer.
She began singing as a child, performing with two New York based gospel groups when she was a teenager. In 1960, she signed with the small Nomar record label, who released the smooth soul ballad "All in My Mind" late in the year. The single became a hit, climbing to number two on the R&B charts (number 19 pop), and it was quickly followed by "Funny", which peaked at number three. Brown was poised to become a star, and she moved to ABC-Paramount in 1962, but left the label within a year and signed to the New York based, uptown soul label, Wand, in 1963.
Brown recorded her best work at Wand, having a string of moderate hits for the label over the next three years. Among these were the Carole King / Gerry Goffin song "Oh No Not My Baby", which reached number 24 on the pop charts; "It's Gonna Be Alright"; and several duets with Chuck Jackson. However, the label focused much of their attention on Dionne Warwick, leaving Maxine Brown to toil in semi-obscurity.
In 1969, she left Wand and signed first with Commonwealth United and then Avco Records, but her later recordings met with little commercial success. Despite her lack of hits, Brown is acknowledged as one of the finest R&B vocalists of her time, capable of delivering soul, jazz, and pop with equal aplomb.
2) Maxine Brown (April 27, 1931 – January 21, 2019) was an American country music singer who was originally a member of the successful 1950s trio the Browns, before a brief solo career.
Yesterday's Kisses
Maxine Brown Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I turned and walked away, a tear in my eye.
Oh, you were the winner and I was the one to lose.
Yesterday's kisses bring tomorrow's blues.
I gave you all my love.
You gave nothing in return.
You took everything I had.
There's one thing I've learned.Oh, you may have been the winner,
And I was the one to lose.
I said, yesterday's kisses bring tomorrow's blues.
You never get nothing for nothing.
You're a fool if you don't believe it still.
And, if you don't take good care of yourself,
Nobody ever will.
Now you're gone.
There's nothing else to say.
Night will bring just another day.
Oh, I wake up crying for I am the one to lose.
I lost yesterday's kisses, but gained tomorrow's blues.
The lyrics to Maxine Brown's song "Yesterday's Kisses" tell the story of a failed relationship. The singer is speaking to their former lover, who broke things off with them, leaving them feeling heartbroken and alone. As they reflect on the past, they realize that they put everything they had into the relationship, while their partner gave nothing in return. They also acknowledge that the pain they're feeling now is a result of all the happy moments they shared in the past, as those memories only make their current loneliness that much more acute.
The song is ultimately a warning against the dangers of giving too much of oneself in a relationship without receiving anything in return. While the singer may have been the one left with the blues, they also acknowledge that their partner will not be able to avoid the same kind of pain if they keep living their life the way they do.
Overall, "Yesterday's Kisses" is a melancholy but honest reflection on the end of a relationship that didn't work out, and the pain that comes with losing someone you once loved.
