Fly Away
May Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"When will you be home?" she asks
As we watch the planes take off
We both know we have no clear answer to where my dreams may lead
She's watched me as I crawled and stumbled
As a child, she was my world
And now to let me go, I know she bleeds
And yet she says to me
You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I'll be prayin' every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we'll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

Autumn leaves fell into spring time and
Silver-painted hair
Daddy called one evening saying
"We need you. Please come back"
When I saw her laying in her bed
Fragile as a child
Pale just like an angel taking flight
I held her as I cried

You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I'll be prayin' every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we'll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away
Oh...

I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to MAY's song "Fly Away" tell a heartfelt story about a young person leaving home to pursue their dreams, while their parent watches them go with a mixture of pride and sadness. The opening lines set the scene, with the parent asking when the child will be home and the two of them watching planes take off, symbolizing the child's departure into the wider world. Despite the fact that neither of them knows where the child's dreams will lead them, the parent has faith in their ability to "fly so high" and encourages them to keep their gaze "upon the sky."

The second verse brings a twist to the story, as the child receives a phone call from their father saying that they are needed back home. When the child returns, they find their mother gravely ill in bed, her frailty contrasting with the strength and determination that she imparted to her child. The line "I love you too much to make you stay" takes on a bittersweet significance as the parent urges the child to continue pursuing their dreams, even as they face the knowledge that they may be separated by distance or circumstances. The repeated refrain of "Fly away" symbolizes both the physical act of leaving and the emotional act of letting go.

Overall, the lyrics to "Fly Away" are a poignant tribute to the complex emotions that arise when a child leaves home and the enduring love between parent and child.

This song never fails to tear up. My mom went through a health scare a few years ago just before the pandemic hit, which rendered her blind in 1 eye. Thankfully, she's stable now, but I will never get the image of her in a weakened state out of my mind. This song encapsulates that ordeal perfectly.

Lost my mother 15 years ago and cried to this song.

I've my own children and a newborn... And this song still resonates when I think about her in her final days. It'll be the same song I want to leave my children with when they grow up

I think she is amazing and ive just discovered her and i've instantly fallen in love with her. I love this kinda of music, so inspirational and deep! The imagery used here is very similar to a ancient, famous chinese poet who wrote a poem about mother and daughter relationship. lol its so sad though, but its reality. We all have to leave our mother one day, we can never justify or fully repay their love, but only forward it to our children.
