Song 1
Mayer/Watts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Staying home alone on a Friday
Flat on the floor looking back
On old love
Or lack thereof
After all the crushes are faded
And all my wishful thinking was wrong
I'm jaded
I hate it

I'm tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here
So tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here
Get here

Searching all my days just to find you
I'm not sure who I'm looking for
I'll know it
When I see you
Until then, I'll hide in my bedroom
Staying up all night just to write
A love song for no one

I'm tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here
So tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here
Get here

I could have met you in a sandbox
I could have passed you on the sidewalk
Could I have missed my chance
And watched you walk away?
Oh no way

I could have met you in a sandbox
I could have passed you on the sidewalk
Could I have missed my chance
And watched you walk away?

I'm tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here
So tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here
Get here

I'm tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here
I'm so tired of being alone
So hurry up and get here oh yeah

You'll be so good
You'll be so good for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mayer/Watts's song "Song 1" speak about the frustrations of being alone and longing for love. They describe the feeling of being jaded and tired of fruitless endeavors in seeking love. The song looks at the search for love in a slightly whimsical way, suggesting that the singer is not sure who they are searching for, but that they will know it when they find it. The lyrics imply that the singer has put a great deal of effort into trying to find this love, but it has not yet materialized.

The song's chorus repeats the sentiment that the singer is tired of being alone and wants their love to hurry up and get there. The repetition of the phrase "so hurry up and get here" emphasizes the singer's impatience and desire for love. The lyrics suggest that the singer feels that they are missing out on something by not having love in their life, and they are afraid that they may have missed their chance with a potential love interest.

Overall, the lyrics to "Song 1" capture the universal feeling of longing for companionship and the fear of missing out on a potential love connection. The dreamy, wistful quality of the song reflects the uncertainty and vulnerability that often come with searching for love.

I used to think John Mayer was some type of poppy songwriter that wasn't anything special, but after trying out his music I am blown away at how talented of a musician he is and the type of respect he has for the whole process.

Sophie Oshaughnessy

I know what you mean I blew him off for years (TBH his first song Body is a Wonderland kinda creeped me out) and now I’m obsessed with his vibe, his artistry, and his commitment to his talent and those of other artists

Listen to the live version “Nokia theatre” of “who did you think I was”

Rickard Örtegren

Agreed. Someone told me artist sometime write poppy stuff (your body is a wonderland) to get the money and time and audience trust to do the weird stuff. Makes sense.

john mayer is so dorky, and awkward and funny, and even though he can be cocky, he is really good at what he does, he is really passionate about music, and is willing to really work for his music. So I respect him for that, and I love his music.

Why John Mayer is stupid ?

Ross De Potato

I personally don't think he's cocky. In the studio he's super respectful and humble towards the other musicians. IMO he's unapologetically passionate about what he does.

Martyn Payne

@Not in Gb he gets very dorky about his watches. I find it very cool
