Slow
Mayer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not a silly little moment
It's not the storm before the calm
This is the deep and dying breath of
This love that we've been working on
Can't seem to hold you like I want to
So I can feel you in my arms
Nobody's gonna come and save you
We pulled too many false alarms

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

I was the one you always dreamed of
You were the one I tried to draw
How dare you say it's nothing to me?
Baby, you're the only light I ever saw
I'll make the most of all the sadness
You'll be a bitch because you can
You'll try to hit me, just to hurt me
So you leave me feeling dirty
'Cause you can't understand

We're going down
And you can see it too
We're going down
And you know that we're doomed
My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room

Go cry about it, why don't you?
Go cry about it, why don't you?
Go cry about it, why don't you?

My dear, we're slow dancing in a burning room
Burning room
Burning room
Burning room
Burning room

Don't you think we ought to know by now?
Don't you think we should've learned somehow?
Don't you think we ought to know by now?
Don't you think we should've learned somehow?

Don't you think we ought to know by now?
Don't you think we should've learned somehow?

Overall Meaning

The song “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” is a heartbreaking ballad about a relationship that is coming to an end. The opening lines emphasize that this is not just a trivial moment or a temporary difficulty- this is the end of something significant. The singer sings about how they can’t hold their loved one like they want to, and nobody is going to “save them” from their inevitable breakup. The chorus repeats the haunting phrase “we’re going down” to emphasize that the relationship is failing, and there is no way to stop it. Additionally, the phrase “slow dancing in a burning room” is a metaphor for the couple’s relationship- they are still trying to hold onto something that is self-destructing around them.

The second verse is particularly poignant- the singer sings about how the other person was the one they always dreamed of, and how unjust it is that they can say “it’s nothing” when the relationship means everything to them. He even acknowledges that he will make the most of his sadness, but the other person will probably just be cruel because they can be. The lines “You try to hit me, just hurt me / So you leave me feeling dirty / ‘Cause you can’t understand” suggest that the other person is trying to hurt him because they don’t know how to process their feelings, and it only adds insult to injury.

Perhaps the most telling lines are in the bridge section, where the singer begs the other person to “go cry about it”. He has accepted that the relationship is over, but the other person is still trying to hold onto something that’s already gone. The final lines of the song- “Don’t you think we outta know by now? / Don’t you think we shoulda learned somehow?” are a painful reminder that, despite everything, they still haven’t figured out how to make their relationship work.

I know everyone always talk about the mid solo and while it is certainly one of his best, I have a deep love for the outro in the studio version. Never has a guitar cried more than from 3:10 to 3:35
That entire part is like lightning I a bottle to me. No musician has ever captured the absolute despair of losing someone you love in a relationship quite like this. You can HEAR the fire that's tearing them apart.
This song is played on Instagram every day and there is a reason for that. I've watched literal hundreds of live performances on YouTube and yet I never tire of it.
No piece of music has ever moved or inspired me more than this.
Any guitar player will instantly understand why this song is so incredibly masterful.
Nothing I have ever heard has made this much sense to me.
I connect with this song on an artistic level, on a musical level and most importantly on a human level. John's music is the greatest friend and the greatest companion in life I could have ever hoped for and will be a part of it until it's over. I get everything he's trying to tell me all the time. There is hardly a song of his that I don't appreciate and connect with.
I am incredibly grateful for theft that John and his music found me so early in my life (I'm 19 years old as of now) and I can't wait for what this incredible human being will put out there next.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk :)
(To whoever reads this I hope you're doing okay and are enjoying life to the best of your ability. Be safe and be kind.)
