Chimera
Mayhem (Metal) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Something in space time is logically ill
What can be seen in the rear view mirror
Expectancy was a Mephisto's gasp,Your past was never quite there
There was nothing that loose in the constituents of your substance
It does indeed exist in parts of your
Neural commitments to the mind body, Or does evil exist?
Ways she behaved in your guilt
Conclusions are never to be trusted
You are not dead, You never existed, You are not dead
Her devotees were never that pure, Pure existence
Was never arbitrary, Not in my convictions of the truth
She gave the demon seeds life, The necessity of the game given
Displayed a virtue unseen in you
There is gang grene in the tubes of the vermicular ethics of how
Your world view presents itself contradictions in terms of how
Your life evolves in the chain of being
I claim you were never a part of reality, This is where your life
Lie grows pale, never known to your mirror self
She was a creature alive in you
But I put my hand through the object of her desire inside your iris
And she ran down my fingers
Like the sand in the desert of your mind
Hell was never an option for you, Luciferian tolerance
Yields the given, Your dissolving truth tables
You are not dead, you never existed
The sum of all you ever knew equals zero
You are not dead, you never existed
The lyrics of Mayhem's song "Chimera" explore the themes of identity and reality, and how they are intertwined with the concept of evil. The song begins with the singer presenting a "fornication" or a twisted, corrupted version of reality to the listener. He suggests that there is something wrong with the logic of space-time and that what can be seen in the rearview mirror may not be what it seems. The listener's past is also called into question, with the suggestion that it was "never quite there."
As the song continues, the singer explores the idea of evil and how it exists within the mind-body connection. He suggests that there is something "paranoid" in the ways that she behaved in the listener's guilt. The idea of pure existence is also explored, with the suggestion that it was never arbitrary. The listener is told that they were never a part of reality and that their life "lie grows pale, never known to your mirror self."
The singer then suggests that there is a "creature" alive in the listener, but that he is able to put his hand through it like an object. He suggests that "Hell was never an option" for the listener, and that their "dissolving truth tables" mean that the sum of all they ever knew equals zero. The song ends with the repeated refrain that the listener is not dead and never existed, implying that their identity and reality are fundamentally flawed.

I don't know why more people don't consider this a masterpiece. The music and vocals are fucking insane.

Mayhem were not only one of the Black Metal pioneers, but also one of the first Avant-Garde Black Metal bands.

This comment is quite accurate in that people didn't talk about black metal before Mayhem. Venom was just sloppy AF and Bathory was stuff like nobody had heard. Out of the spirit of those bands, and with some design assistance from Brazilians, Euronymous forged a full subgenre with not more than a dozen awkward Norwegian kids. Before Morbid Angel, you'd freely talk about death metal and mean Slayer as much as Possessed. But this is far from the most significant thing you would have no frame of reference for if you came to it after the 21st century dawned.

Maybe not outright, but their electronic intro on Deathcrush and Attila's vocals were pretty experimental for the time, and Grand declaration of war was very fresh at the time

This album pisses all over the idea that a BM record must be lo-fi. The production on this beast is beautiful, so full, so aggressive

Depends on how deep spacey and deep forest-like one wants to make it sound. This one's fine to me. But there is also modern ways to get the low-fi sound too and staying big. Blut Aus Nord has done that very craftfully on the latest album
