Maylene and the Sons of Disaster's II was released on Ferret Records nationwide on March 20, 2007.
Maylene's third album, III, was released on June 23, 2009. The song Just a Shock was released to the band's MySpace page on May 11th, 2009. III debuted at #71 on the Billboard 200.
Dallas Taylor is the most notable member of Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. He was the original vocalist for the metalcore/post-hardcore band Underoath until late 2003.
The band name and concept are based on the legend of the criminal gang of Ma Barker and her sons, noting that evil lifestyles will be met with "divine justice".
Maylene's current roster is:
Dallas Taylor - Vocals
Roman Haviland - Bass
Kelly Scott Nunn - Guitar
Matt Clark - Drums
Chad Huff - Guitar
Jake Duncan - Guitar
and former members include:
Scott Collum - Guitar (2004 - 2008)
Josh Cornutt - Guitar (2004 - 2008)
Josh Williams - Guitar (2005 - 2008)
Lee Turner - Drums (2004-2008)
Although there have been many reports of Maylene and the Sons of Disaster being a Christian band, there is little to no evidence in their lyrics, and Dallas Taylor has been noted in a 2006 interview that "Maylene and Christianity are children of two entirely separate mothers."
In late 2007, he was also reported to have said that "just because [he] was formerly involved with a Christian band (referring to Underoath), it doesn't explicitly make our band a Christian band. We know that many of our fans are Christians, and that's fine, but we as a band in no way endorse the philosophies taught by today's Christian church." Dallas has been quoted saying "For us, faith is what makes us.", noting that members of the band may be Christians, and their faith may motivate them to do what they do, but Maylene is not an evangelical Christian band.
Darkest Of Kin
Maylene and the Sons of Disaster Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
never truly living
Walking so close to death lets me know what it means to be alive.
It's where I find my high
Terror like this world has never seen
Look in my eyes, see what I've done
Always on the move, hell comes along.
STAND UP, FISTS OUT - THIS IS THE REAL THING!
Been to the midwestern lights, fed on the fear in her eyes.
Family's begging for their lives but, giving in's no trait or mine.
Hit your knees and pray, pray you never see this face
I've been called the hypocrite to bring down
STAND UP (STAND UP)
FISTS OUT (FISTS OUT)
THIS IS THE REAL THING!
STAND UP (STAND UP)
FISTS OUT (FISTS OUT)
I WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY!
Baby I'm bad, I'm the fear in your eyes.
That hate in your heart has been branded with my name
You oughta been warned
Not to cross the tracks to my side of town
Dark clouds will follow
GOD MAKE ME PAY LIKE THE DEVIL I AM
The lyrics to "Darkest of Kin," by Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, reflect a life that's lived constantly in danger and always at the brink of death. The song is an exploration of finding excitement and meaning through the constant threat of danger. The first lines describe a life that seems dull and meaningless, with people simply going about their day without ever truly living. But the singer of the song draws meaning from the danger that's ever-present in their life.
The lyrics suggest that the singer has done terrible things, things that would shock and horrify others. And while they seem to have some regrets about what they've done, they feel alive and invigorated by the danger that follows them everywhere they go. There's a sense of power and control in the way they talk about their actions and their ability to face danger head-on.
The song is a powerful reflection of the human love for danger and excitement, even when it comes at the cost of others' safety or our own. It's a daring exploration of the ways in which we find meaning and excitement in life, even when that means taking risks that could ultimately be our downfall.

First time I seen MATSOD they opened with Inhale Exhale for August Burns Red in Little Rock, Arkansas. Crowd smaller than 100 people. MATSOD and IE... two great Christian bands who were greatful for every breath. ABR... acted like they deserved better and were very disrespectful to the crowd. Needless to say Maylene still put for a great effort and gave an awesome show. Much respect to MATSOD.
