Frankie Beverly's smooth, distinct voice is instantly recognized, and Maze's laid-back, bass driven musical arrangements differ a lot from other soul acts. Their signature sound is especially vivid on the classic "Live in New Orleans."
Maze signed a contract with Capitol Records in 1976, and released their debut LP, "Maze featuring Frankie Beverly", in 1977. They had great success with the debut and the following albums "Golden Time of Day" (1978), "Inspiration" (1979) and "Joy and Pain" (1980).

Joy and Pain
Maze Lyrics

Kind that lasts forever more so you thought it would
Suddenly the things you see got you hurt so bad, so bad
How come the things that make us happy make us sad
Well it seems to me that
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Love can be bitter, love can be sweet
Sometimes devotion and sometimes deceit
The ones that you care for give you so much pain
Oh but it's alright they're both one in the same
Listen, don't it seem we go through life going up and down
Seems the things that turn you on turn you around
Always hurting each other if it ain't one thing it's another
When the world is down on you love's somewhere around
And I want you to know that
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Over and over you can be sure
There will be sorrow but you will endure (you will endure)
Where there's a flower there's the sun and the rain
Oh but it's wonderful they're both one in the same
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy and pain are like sunshine and rain
Joy
and Pain by Maze is a soulful ballad that explores the complexities of love through the lens of emotions that are inherently intertwined with life. It urges listeners to understand that joy and pain are like two sides of the same coin as they are both integral to existence. The song starts by reminiscing the initial euphoria of falling in love, where everything feels perfect and bound to last forever, but slowly transitioning into a more bittersweet reality where the very things that brought happiness begin to bring pain.
The chorus of the song is where the listener is reminded that just like sunshine and rain, joy and pain are two sides of the same coin. The lyrics talk about how love can sometimes be a source of both happiness and sadness, and how one has to experience both in order to grow and endure. The bridge of the song takes a more philosophical turn as it reflects on the trials and tribulations of life and how the things that give us immense pleasure can also bring us pain. However, the lyrics reassure us that we must persevere through tough times, that where there is darkness, there will be light.
