The lyrics of "Ngobamakhosi" by Mbongeni Ngema speak of the struggle and resistance of the Zulu people against the colonial powers, particularly during the time of the Anglo-Zulu War in the late 19th century. The song starts with a reference to the purchasing of spears with money, symbolizing the loss of traditional culture and the forced adoption of modern practices. The lyrics then shift to the violence and bloodshed of the battle, with the opposition of shields and spears against guns in Johannesburg. The chorus is a call to arms, a rallying cry for the people to fight for their rights and for the power of their kings, specifically mentioning the legacy of King Shaka and other Zulu leaders. The song is a powerful reminder of the strength and perseverance of the Zulu people in the face of colonial oppression.
