The first time I heard this back in high school in the mid 1970’s I heard something that knocked me out. During the first chorus of Joe Henderson’s solo, while McCoy is comping through the changes Ron Carter hangs on the tonic creating tension like a bouncer at a club whose not yet ready to let you in. The tension keeps building, with Henderson floating a top the changes and Carter’s peddle point until Carter opens the door at the beginning of the second chorus by going from the peddle point to a walking base, as if to say, “ok, come on in, we’re gonna swing now” Genius

A classic Ron Carter move. One of my favorite bassmen.
@russelljazzbeck
oh wow yeah really brings that second chorus to life.

Absolute killer piano progressions. McCoy at his best.
