Long Lonely Nights
McPhatter Clyde Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I cry my eyes out over you
Wond'ring if I did right
And why you left me with a broken heart
Oh, long, long and lonely nights
Oh, how I miss you, my dear
Please, please, come back to me
As I go along my lonely way I visualize your face
When I pass through (yeah!) my doorway
What's left for me to face?
Oh, long, long and lonely nights
I guess you're never coming home
Long, long and lonely nights
Ever since you've been gone
As I go along my lonely way I visualize your face
When I pass through (yeah!) my doorway
What's left for me to face?
Oh, oh, oh, long, long and lonely nights
I guess you're never coming home
Long, long and lonely nights
Ever since you've been gone
Please, please, come back to me
You've been gone too long

Clyde was a member of Billy Ward's Dominoes. Ward fired him and replaced him with Jackie Wilson. Ahmet Ertegun built a group around him and called them The Drifters. Clyde was drafted into the Army but, stationed in New Jersey, was able to continue recording. When he was discharged from the Army, he went solo.

I met him once when I was in high school. He was very nice to my friend and me. I was very saddened when I heard he died at age 39.

Clyde's version is distinctly in third place for me behind the definitive Lee Andrews & The Hearts original and The Kings version on Bation which is pretty cool too. It does beat Kitty Kallens version tho LOL!
