Hoo Ha
Me Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A vain bunch aren't we all
Staring back, across the room
Our eyes meet yet once more
Hoo ha, hoo ha!
Picture, picture, through the lens
Only now, I failed to see
The shoes didn't match the dress
Is there something
In the mirror
We can't see?
Now it's too bad you can't close your eyes and make it go away
All the wicked spells have served you well, we're bound to live with the
Hoo ha, hoo ha
All of this fuss, such a tiny thing,
Cโmon you'll have to get a move on
(Have to get a move on)
Why all this fuss over tiny things
Yes you'll have to get a move on
(Have to get a move on)
(Have to get a)
Now it's too bad you can't close your eyes and make it go away
All the wicked spells have served you well
We're bound by disarray
La la la, la la la,
La la la, la la
Is there something
In the mirror
We can't see?
Now it's too bad you can't close your eyes and make it go away
All the wicked spells with all their charm are bound by disarray
La la la, la la la,
La la la, la la la,
La la la, la la la,
La la la, la la la
Hoo ha, hoo ha
Hoo ha, hoo ha
The lyrics of Me's song "Hoo Ha" touch upon the themes of vanity, self-reflection, and the power of appearance. The opening stanza features the classic "mirror, mirror on the wall" line, emphasizing the character's preoccupation with their own image. As they look at themselves in the mirror, they acknowledge the vanity shared by many. The repetition of "our eyes meet yet once more" suggests a hypnotic fixation on their own reflection.
The second verse shifts to a camera lens, which serves as an extension of the character's fixation with their looks. However, through this new perspective, the character identifies a mistake in their outfit- the shoes don't match the dress. This line may serve as a metaphor, highlighting the imperfection that can persist despite one's outward appearance.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Hoo Ha" multiple times. While it's unclear what this phrase means, it serves as a rhythmic punctuation, almost like a rally cry of sorts. The final verse echoes the themes of vanity, highlighting that the superficial nature of appearance cannot be escaped. The line "All the wicked spells have served you well" suggests that the character has consciously made choices to maintain their appearance, but the cost may be worth it.
Overall, "Hoo Ha" comments on the power of physical appearance in society, and how it can become an obsessive focus for many individuals. It encourages listeners to question the motives behind their own fixation on appearance and recognize the complexity of self-image.

At the time Mick Quinn, who plays bass in Supergrass, was recovering from injuries to his spine after sleepwalking out of a second floor window. During his rehabilitation, Danny and Gaz enbarked on a mini-tour as a guitar and drums duo under the name "Diamond Hoo Ha Men." Given the resulting technical limitations, it's not surprising that this song resembles the material of the White Stripes. Mick has since made a full recovery and is back on tour with Supergrass.
