One Tin Soldier
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own

Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill
Asking for the buried treasure
Tons of gold for which they'd kill

It came an answer from the mountain
With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain
All the riches buried there

Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away

Now the valley cried with anger
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people
So they won their just reward

Now they stood beside the treasure
On the mountain, dark and red
Turned the stone and looked beneath it
"Peace on Earth" was all it said

Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away

Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day

On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away

Overall Meaning

The song One Tin Soldier by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes is about two communities, one that lives in the valley and one that lives on a mountain. The people on the mountain have a treasure that is buried deep beneath the stone, and the people in the valley want it for themselves. The lyrics depict how the valley-people send a message up the hill asking for the treasure, but the mountain-people decide to share their secrets instead of the treasure itself. However, the valley-people are not satisfied with this and decide to kill the mountain-people to take the treasure for themselves. When they finally reach the treasure, they find that it only contains the message of "peace on earth."

The song is a metaphor for greed, betrayal, and the futility of violence. It highlights how people can be blinded by their greed and go to any lengths to achieve their goals, including killing their own neighbors. The song also represents the idea that we should not put our faith blindly in material possessions, as they may not bring us true happiness or fulfilment in life.
