Far Away
Mean Lady Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're far across the ocean, far away, far away, I will call your name
When it's far enough to matter, it's a shame, it's a shame, it's a shame, I will call your name
And I won't keep you waiting, won't keep you long my love
And I'll hang all your pictures, hang all your pictures above
And when I'm old enough to marry, what I'll do, what I'll do, what I'll do
I will marry you

When you're far across the ocean, far away, far away, I will call your name
When it's far enough to matter, it's a shame, it's a shame, it's a shame, I will call your name
And I won't keep you waiting, won't keep you long my love
And I'll hang all your pictures, hang all your pictures above
And when I'm old enough to marry, what I'll do, what I'll do, what I'll do
I will marry you
And I will call your name
I will call your name

I will call your name
I will call your name

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mean Lady's "Far Away" speak of a long-distance love where the singer promises to think of her partner across the ocean and call out their name. Distance is emphasized and the idea that when something is far enough to matter, it's a shame that they aren't together. However, the singer promises to not keep their partner waiting and to hang all their pictures, symbolizing that even if they can't physically be together, they will still have a presence in each other's lives. We can also see an indication of commitment in the line "And when I'm old enough to marry, what I'll do, what I'll do, what I'll do, I will marry you."

The lyrics are simple yet heartfelt, with the repetition of "I will call your name" emphasizing the singer's longing for their partner. The use of the phrase "far away" emphasizes the distance between the couple, creating a sense of yearning and melancholy. The overall message of the song is one of commitment and dedication, as the singer promises to marry their partner despite the distance between them.

This talent deserves widespread recognition. I heard you years ago when you released the "Kid Friendly" EP. If anyone likes this song, dig into the rest of their discography like the "Vault" EP or the album "Love Now", you won't be disappointed.
And to Mean Lady, please never stop making music. 🥹

I found this song in 2011 or 12, I think. There was a girl who went to my college in Boston who was asking people to vote for her to win to play at some music festival. I wasn’t into her music much, so I listened to the other artists listed, also trying to win. This song was one of them. I immediately voted and Mean Lady has become one of the best stumbled-upon-artists I’ve ever heard. It was meant to be. Also, this video is so incredibly beautiful. It just melts me.

I’m pretty sure that festival was Bonnaroo, and thank you for voting! :)

They were my homies from well before they started this project. Their music is amazing but beyond that they are 2 of the kindest and most beautiful people I’ve ever been friends with.

I heard this song in my local starbucks here in London. Don't know how something this obscure made it onto their playlist but I'm loving it. Great song.
