After the commercial success of Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and earning a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Meat Loaf nevertheless experienced some difficulty establishing a steady career within the United States. The key to this success was his popularity in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He received the 1994 Brit Award in the United Kingdom for best-selling album and single. He appeared in the 1997 film Spice World and he ranked 23rd for the number of weeks spent on the UK charts in 2006. He ranks 96th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". Meat Loaf appeared in over 50 films and television shows, sometimes as himself or as characters resembling his stage persona. His film roles include Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Robert Paulsen in Fight Club (1999). His early stage work included dual roles in the original Broadway cast of The Rocky Horror Show. He also appeared in the musical Hair, both on and Off-Broadway.

Cry Over Me
Meat Loaf Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't want to feel this
Nothing can stop this pain
Trying to get to a time I forget you
Still tangled in yesterday
It's so easy for you
To give nothing for me
I want you to cry over me
Die over me
Even for a moment
Even for a moment
I want you to hurt over me
Feel what I feel
I want you to cry over, die over me
Baby, just for one time
I want your heart broken
Some sign of emotion
Wanna to see the tears tumble down
Show me I meant something
And that you feel nothing
But your world crashing to the ground
It's so easy for you
To forget about me
Did I ever mean anything?
I want you to cry over me
Die over me
Even for a moment
Even for a moment
I want you to hurt over me
Feel what I feel
I want you to cry over, die over me
Baby, just for one time
Cry, cry, cry
But did you feel something?
Did we mean nothing at all?
I want you to cry over, cry over me
Die over me
Even for a moment
Even for a moment
I want you to hurt over me
Feel what I feel
Even for a moment
Oh, why can't you just cry over, die over me
Baby, why can't you hurt like I do
Like I hurt over you
Can't you cry over, die over me
Baby, just for one time
I want you to cry over, die over me
Baby, want you to fall on your knees
Baby, crawl back to me
Want you to cry over, die over me
Baby, just one time
Cry, cry, cry
The lyrics of Meat Loaf's song Cry Over Me convey the pain and anguish of a person struggling to cope with a broken heart. The singer is sleepless, trying to forget the person who hurt them but finding it impossible to escape the memories of yesterday. The person who caused this pain, however, seems to have moved on easily, giving the singer nothing in return. They ask if they ever meant anything to this person and want to see some emotions, some sign that they had an impact. They want them to feel the same agony as they do, even if it's just for a moment.
The chorus of the song repeats the desire for the person to cry, die, and hurt over them. There is a desperation in the way this message is conveyed, a longing for the other person to understand the depth of their pain. In the end, the singer still questions if there was anything real between them, pleading for some kind of response, some signal, that things meant something.
The song captures the universal experience of unrequited love, rejection, and emotional pain. It reflects on how easy it can be for one person to move on and forget, while the other is left to pick up the pieces. The desire for the other person to share in their hurt is understandable in such situations, showcasing the realness of heartbreak.

Underrated album. One of the better tracks, too. This one helped shape my musical tastes at a time when I was particularly open to new things.

It’s my favorite album of his.

People....If you have listened to Meatloaf’s albums/all music, this is the constant emotion/feeling he expresses in all of his stuff! The unattractive man with the soul and heart bigger than most men who gets the woman. Singing his heart out/bleeding his feelings through his music. Not to mention his very traumatic childhood, turning his passion and love for the art of musical expression into reality! Very unique story. I have all the respect for Him! God bless

There will never be another person whose voice carries more power, nor emits such pure heart and soul behind every lyric as Meat Loaf. He sang as though every song was his last, giving it his all in the name of rock opera. God bless you, Meat Loaf, you will forevermore leave us all awe inspired by your immense energy which gave way to a wonderous exhibition of raw and beautiful emotion that richly flowed through your music.
