After the commercial success of Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and earning a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Meat Loaf nevertheless experienced some difficulty establishing a steady career within the United States. The key to this success was his popularity in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He received the 1994 Brit Award in the United Kingdom for best-selling album and single. He appeared in the 1997 film Spice World and he ranked 23rd for the number of weeks spent on the UK charts in 2006. He ranks 96th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". Meat Loaf appeared in over 50 films and television shows, sometimes as himself or as characters resembling his stage persona. His film roles include Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Robert Paulsen in Fight Club (1999). His early stage work included dual roles in the original Broadway cast of The Rocky Horror Show. He also appeared in the musical Hair, both on and Off-Broadway.

I wonder why you wanted to go
I said no you couldn't come along for the ride
I said hey, I want outta here and nobody taggin' behind
[Chorus]
Don't cha know I love you so I told you a lie
I love you so I told you a lie when I told you goodbye
A family life and a lovin' wife just ain't my kinda scene
Well when I'm all alone, when the nights are cold
I get to thinkin' I was kinda mean
We coulda had a good thing but I never wanted to try
[Chorus]
You know I told you a lie
ah, ah ah, ah ah
Ut, ah ah, ah ah
Ah, ah ah, ah ah
Ut, ah ah, ah ah
A family life and a lovin' wife just ain't my kinda scene
Well when I'm all alone, when the nights are cold
I get to thinkin' I was kinda mean
We coulda had a good thing but I never wanted to try
[Chorus]
You know I told you a lie when I told you goodbye
Don'tcha know, I love you so I
Don'tcha know, I love you so I told you
Don'tcha know, I love you so I told you a lie
Love you so I told you a lie
I loved you so I told you a lie
I loved you so I told you a lie
Loved you so, loved you so
Ah
Loved you so I told you a lie
Ah
Loved you so I told you a lie
The lyrics of Meat Loaf's song "I Love You So I Told You a Lie" express regret over a failed relationship. The singer is haunted by the memory of the person they loved and who they pushed away. Every time they hear the person's name, they wonder why they let them go. The singer admits to lying when they told the person goodbye because they loved them so much. They explain that they could not handle a traditional family life with a loving wife, and they regret never trying to make things work with the person they loved.
The sentiment of the song is one of sadness and regret, with the singer realizing too late their mistake. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and nostalgia, as the singer remembers the good times they shared but acknowledges their unwillingness to commit. The chorus, with the repetition of "Don't cha know I love you so I told you a lie," emphasizes the singer's love for the person and their regret over their actions.
